Game Recap: Wings Heavily Outshoot Walleye But Get Shutout on Road
March 5, 2017 - ECHL (ECHL)
Kalamazoo Wings News Release
TOLEDO, OH- The Kalamazoo Wings ran into an opportunistic Toledo Walleye team that was led by timely scoring and stellar goaltending during a 3-0 loss on Saturday night at the Huntington Center.
Toledo were an inspired team in the opening seconds of the first period and were rewarded for their high-octane attack. Less than thirty seconds into the contest, Evan Rankin freed himself in the high slot for a one-timer that snuck past the pads of Joel Martin.
Two minutes later and fresh off killing a penalty, the Walleye struck again. Using a speedy counter attack, the Walleye raced up the boards and set up a give-and-go which opened up an opportunity for Tyler Spink to angle home his 20th goal of the season.
Kalamazoo leveled out the play as the period progressed, but Toledo earned their second power play try of the game and cashed in on their third goal of the period. Simon Denis slid a pass to the left-side faceoff dot, where Alden Hirschfeld muscled a drive past Martin, who had lost his stick on the play.
The Wings came out of the gates in the second period and appeared to be a completely different team than the one who trailed in the first. Kalamazoo dominated the shots on goal total by outshooting Toledo, 12-4, but the goaltenders wouldn't budge. Jake Paterson made 12 second-period stops and Martin made all four stops required of him.
Once again in the third, Kalamazoo controlled the tempo and created a flurry of chances on the offensive end of the ice. Paterson was equally impressive in the final frame and stopped each one of the 14 shots fired his way by the Wings and earned a 34-save shutout.
