Colorado Eagles News Release
LOVELAND, CO. - Colorado Eagles forward Matt Garbowsky scored a pair of goals while fellow forward Darryl Bootland notched the game-winner as the Eagles defeated the Rapid City Rush 6-4 at the Budweiser Events Center on Friday. The win gives the Eagles a 2-0 record to start the season and back-to-back wins over their rivals to begin the 2016-17 campaign.
Garbowsky put the Eagles on the board first when he raced down the right wing and snapped a wrister past Rush goaltender Kent Patterson to give Colorado the 1-0 advantage at the 11:24 mark of the first period. That lead would grow to 2-0 when Eagles defenseman Michael Sdao stickhandled his way through the Rapid City slot and firing the puck into the back of the net at the 14:50 mark of the opening stanza.
The Rush would storm back in the second period, scoring three goals in the middle frame. Rapid City would collect their first goal of the night when rookie forward Hunter Fejes stuffed home a rebound to cut the Eagles lead to 2-1 with less than 10 minutes to play in the period. Only 1:34 later, Rapid City forward Brett Perlini would light the lamp with a drive from the high slot to knot the score at 2-2.
Colorado would answer back with a shorthanded goal at the 14:24 mark, as forward Johnny Lazo deflected a shot from the blue line from defenseman Teigan Zahn to beat Patterson and put the Eagles back on top 3-2.
The Rush would find a quick answer on the ensuing power play as forward Lindsay Sparks stuffed in a puck from the side of the net to even the score at 3-3 at the 15:19 mark of the second.
With the score deadlocked at 3-3 heading into the third period, Rapid City would claim their first lead of the game when forward Brendan Walker hammered in a puck from between the circles with 11:55 gone in the final frame, making it 4-3 in favor of the Rush.
Just 12 seconds later, Garbowsky would again find himself striding down the right wing and would beat Patterson top-shelf to tie the game at 4-4. Colorado would keep a firm grip on the momentum, as Bootland would locate a rebound in the Rapid City crease, stuffing it in the net and giving the Eagles the 5-4 advantage at the 14:54 mark of the third period. Less than four minutes later Colorado would capitalize on the power play, as rookie forward Cole Sanford laced a wrister from the circle past Patterson to give Colorado the 6-4 victory over the Rush.
Nathan Lieuwen collected the win in net for Colorado, stopping 25 of the 29 shots he faced in the contest.
The Eagles will continue their homestand when they host the Alaska Aces on Friday, October 21st at 7:05pm. Season tickets for the 2016-17 season are on-sale now and can be reserved with a $50 deposit per seat by calling the Eagles ticket office at 970-686-SHOT (7468).
