Veteran Defenseman Wilson Joins Mallards

October 15, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Quad City Mallards News Release

MOLINE, Ill. - The Quad City Mallards have signed defenseman Mike Wilson to a standard player contract, the Mallards announced today.

Wilson, 29, scored six goals, added 21 assists and totaled 27 points in 52 games with the Belfast Giants in Britain's Elite Ice Hockey League last season.

"I had Mike in Rio Grande Valley and he was a workhorse for me," said Mallards coach and general manager Terry Ruskowski. "He's offensive minded, skates well, moves the puck well and he's a really good team guy."

Wilson was placed on the Mallards' reserve list upon signing and will not play in the Flock's game against the Komets in Fort Wayne tonight.

Wilson last played in North America in 2014-15 when he finished fourth among ECHL defensemen in points (50), tied for fifth in assists (37) and tied for sixth in goals (13) while playing all 72 games for the Wichita Thunder. The 6-foot-1-inch, 185-pound North Vancouver, British Columbia, native also played for Wichita- then a member of the Central Hockey League- in 2013-14.

The Mallards are Wilson's fifth ECHL club. In addition to the Thunder, he previously played for the Orlando Solar Bears, Victoria Salmon Kings and Phoenix Roadrunners. Wilson played for Ruskowski's Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees in the CHL in 2011-12

Wilson has also skated in 95 American Hockey League games for the Worcester Sharks, with whom he broke into the professional ranks in 2008-09. He has notched six goals and 15 assists for 21 career AHL points.

Last season's European sojourn was the third of Wilson's career. He spent part of the 2011-12 campaign with Starbulls Rosenheim in Germany and had a short stint with Aalborg Pirates in Denmark in 2013-14.

In all, Wilson has recorded 51 goals, 195 assists and 246 points in 496 career regular season games.

Wilson turned pro after spending two full campaigns and parts of three others in the Western Hockey League, where he skated for the Swift Current Broncos for two and a half seasons after a pair of brief stints with the Prince Albert Raiders.

The Mallards next play at home Wednesday night, October 26 against the Missouri Mavericks. That game and all Mallards Wednesday night home games this season will face off at the special early start time of 6:35 p.m.

Single game tickets for all Mallards regular season home games- including the game on October 26- are on sale now at the iWireless Center box office, Ticketmaster outlets, ticketmaster.com and Ticketmaster charge-by-phone toll free at 1-800-745-3000 .
