Brampton Steelheads News Release

The Mississauga Steelheads (31-29-1-3, 7th in Eastern Conference) took some time to get there, but they eventually punched their ticket to the postseason with a win at home on Sunday. Their third playoff berth came against the Sudbury Wolves (16-42-4-1, 10th in the Eastern Conference) in a hard fought battle that came right down to the very end. The Wolves tried to mount a last minute comeback but the Steelheads would not be denied their spot in the playoffs any longer as they held on for a 2-1 victory. The Steelheads currently sit in seventh in a tight knit Eastern Conference with 66 points, not far behind Ottawa (67 points), Peterborough (68 points) and Niagara (70 points) who are all still jockeying for postseason positioning.

The Steelheads will get a little break this weekend as they only have one game. That game comes on the road tonight against the Kingston Frontenacs (44-15-2-2, 1st in the Eastern Conference). The Steelheads and Frontenacs have faced off three times this season, with Kingston leading the series 2-1.

The two first met on October 2nd, 2015 at the Hershey Centre. The contest was back and forth but saw the Steelheads take seven penalties to the Frontenacs three. Both teams' penalty kills had strong performances as neither team could capitalize on the power play. The game came right down to the wire as the Frontenacs held a 2-1 lead over the Steelheads going into the last minute of play. The Steelheads pressed the action with the goalie pulled, but weren't able to score the tying goal as the Frontenacs sealed their victory with an empty netter.

A week later, Mississauga would travel to the K-Rock Centre in Kingston for their second meeting against the Frontenacs. Again, this contest was a close, hard fought battle that only saw one goal from each team going into the third period. The third period was fast paced and physical much like the first two. The score was 1-1 just before the two minute mark when Mississauga took a costly high sticking penalty. The Frontenacs would score just 12 seconds into their power play. The Steelheads couldn't mount a comeback as they fell 2-1.

The last meeting on January 17th, 2016 featured a lot of physicality from both teams. The tension between the two teams finally erupted as Daniel De Sousa (Mississauga) and Ryan Verbeek (Kingston) squared off at the half way mark of the first period. De Sousa would take the bout, which energized the Steelheads for the rest of the game. Similar to the previous two contests the game would come down to the final minutes. This time it was the Steelheads with the one goal lead over the Frontenacs. Even though Kingston tried everything they could to tie the game the Steelheads would end up scoring an empty net goal to win the game.

Going into their fourth and final contest this season, the Steelheads will look to continue where they left off on January 17th and pick up a crucial two points. Beating the number one team should put the Eastern Conference on notice, as the Steelheads look to prove that they're true playoff contenders.
