Spirit Lose 4-3 Nail-Biter in Overtime to Sting

SAGINAW, MI - On Friday night, the Saginaw Spirit hit the road to take on the Sarnia Sting, looking for their first win in their last three contests. In a seesaw affair, the Spirit took the Sting to the brink, before falling in overtime 4-3 on a Travis Konecny penalty shot goal.

In the first period, Mitchell Stephens got the scoring started for the Spirit at 12:39 from Tye Felhaber and Artem Artemov. The goal for Stephens gave him a point in seven consecutive games and the assist for Felhaber gave him a point in six straight. Sarnia came back strong, scoring two tallies in 1:19 courtesy of Anthony Salinitri and Matt Mistele to take a 2-1 advantage. Shots in the first favored the Sting, 15-11.

Brady Gilmour scored the lone tally of the second period at 6:53 evening things up at 2-2.

The Spirit took the lead once again 27 seconds into the third period when Mitchell Stephens scored his second goal of the night and 17th of the season. Tye Felhaber notched his second assist of the night on the goal. New Jersey Devils prospect Pavel Zacha tied the game at 1:01 of the period on a slap shot from the right circle. The remainder of the third period was like a heavyweight fight, with both teams trying to deliver knockout blows. The goaltending shined brightest. Cameron Zanussi of the Spirit and Charlie Graham of the Sting stole the show in the final frame, keeping the game 3-3 through regulation.

In overtime, Travis Konecny was held by Keaton Middleton and given a penalty shot at 2:48 of overtime. He was able to find the five-hole of Zanussi and earn the Sting the extra point and a 4-3 decision. Final shots favored the Sarnia Sting, 38-35.
