North Bay Battalion News Release
PETERBOROUGH, Ont. - Logan DeNoble and Greg Betzold scored third-period goals 16 seconds apart to lift the Peterborough Petes to a 4-3 comeback victory over the North Bay Battalion in Ontario Hockey League action Thursday night.
Hunter Garlent had one goal and one assist, and Josh Maguire also scored for the Petes. Goaltender Matthew Mancina made 30 saves for Peterborough, which captured a third straight win to improve its won-lost-extended record to 31-26-6 for 68 points, second in the East Division and fifth in the Eastern Conference, one point ahead of the idle Ottawa 67's.
Mike Amadio, with his 47th goal of the season, tying the franchise record, Zach Poirier and Zach Shankar scored for North Bay, 32-22-9 for 73 points, second in the Central Division and third in the Eastern Conference. Goaltender Jake Smith faced 39 shots for the Battalion, which opened a three-game road trip and played the third of five consecutive away games.
DeNoble tied the game 3-3 when he converted an Eric Cornel pass in the goalmouth at 11:39 of the final frame before Betzold knocked home his own rebound for his team-leading 40th goal of the season.
The Battalion, which trailed 2-1 after 40 minutes, tied it at 6:03. Poirier raced down the left wing and, using Brett McKenzie as a decoy, beat Mancina from the top of the left-wing circle. Mike Baird and Kyle Wood drew assists on Poirier's 15th goal.
Shankar, demonstrating the Troops' own rapid-fire capabilities, put the visitors ahead at 7:17 when he snapped the puck past Mancina from just inside the blue line. Defenceman Shankar's third goal was assisted by Kyle Potts and Justin Brazeau.
North Bay had its chances after the Betzold goal, but comeback hopes took a decided hit when Smith hesitated on the way to the bench and a sixth skater entered play for a too-many-men bench minor at 17:55.
Maguire opened the scoring at 2:41 of the first period, beating Smith from the right-wing circle after a turnover, and Garlent scored his 38th goal on the power play at 15:58 after the Battalion was called for too many men on the ice.
Amadio scored at 6:15 of the second period on a sole assist by Smith, wristing the puck past Mancina to the far side from the mid slot. The goal tied the mark set by Wojtek Wolski in 2005-06 and gave Amadio 93 points, the second-highest total in franchise history after Wolski's 128, also in 2005-06. Cody Hodgson had 92 points in 2008-09.
The Battalion faces off against the Oshawa Generals at 7:35 p.m. Friday. The game can be seen live in North Bay on CogecoTV Channel 12 and heard on Country 600 CKAT.
