Saginaw Spirit News Release
SAGINAW, MI - On Friday night, the Saginaw Spirit (23-33-4-3 53 points, 8th Western Conference) head to the Sarnia Sports & Entertainment Centre to face the Sarnia Sting (38-18-5-2 83 points, 2nd Western Conference). The puck drops at 7:05 p.m.
The Spirit have dropped their past three contest, losing Thursday night to the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds 7-3 at The Dow Event Center. The Spirit are 3-4-1-0 since interim Head Coach Moe Mantha took over the team on February 16th. Saginaw remains in possession of the eighth and final playoff spot in Western Conference by seven points over the Flint Firebirds.
Through this sputtering stretch for Spirit Tampa Bay Lightning prospect Mitchell Stephens and 2016 draft eligible Tye Felhaber continue to light it up. Stephens, 19, is currently riding a six-game point streak and has 13 points in his last 10 games Felhaber has a streak of five consecutive games with a point.
The Sarnia Sting are in a dog fight with the Spitfires for the West Division Championship and home-ice in the first round of the playoffs. With Sarnia's head-to-head win Thursday night in Windsor, the Sting have opened up a three-point lead on the Spits for first place in the West Division.
The Sting are led by deadline acquisition Travis Konecny, who is a 2015 first round pick of the Philadelphia Flyers. Konecny's 93 points have him tied with North Bay's Mike Amadio for seventh in the OHL. Sarnia is also home to the second most coveted player in this year's NHL Draft. Jakob Chychrun is a highly-touted, offensively gifted rearguard with 46 points in 59 games this season. Also rated on the NHL Central Scouting list is Jordan Kyrou (45) and Anthony Salinitri (126).
