LAST TIME OUT:
The Bears skated to a 3-2 shootout victory over the Rockford IceHogs last night at Giant Center to improve the club's point streak to 17 games and the win streak to 11 straight. The IceHogs would take a 1-0 lead at 1:21 of the opening period on a power play goal from Peter Holland. Hershey evened the score on Ryan Sproul's eighth goal of the season at 14:54 of the opening period, but Jacob Nilsson gave Rockford the lead back at 17:45. For the second straight evening, Hershey scored an early third period goal to tie the game as Garrett Pilon struck at 1:28 to make it 2-2. The game progressed to a shootout where Nathan Walker scored the deciding goal to give Hershey the win. The Sound Tigers also earned a shootout win last night as they defeated Springfield 4-3 on home ice. Former Bears Chris and Ryan Bourque each had a goal for the Sound Tigers.
SEASON SERIES VS. SOUND TIGERS:
This afternoon's contest is the third of six meetings between the two clubs this season. The Sound Tigers beat Hershey in the Bears' second game of the season, 2-1, back on Oct. 7. The Bears have played the Sound Tigers once during the club's current winning streak, notching a 4-1 win at the Webster Bank Arena on Jan. 21. The Chocolate and White got goals from Mike Sgarbossa, Riley Barber, Garrett Pilon, and Juuso Ikonen in the win. Over the last five years, Hershey boasts a 14-9-0-3 record versus the Sound Tigers.
MORE HISTORY AHEAD:The Bears have a chance to tie the club's franchise record for the longest winning streak in today's game. With a win, the Bears would tie the club's franchise record of 12 straight wins, set during the historic 2009-10 season. Then, Hershey went from Dec. 12-Jan. 9 without losing as the club went on to win 60 games, and later claimed the franchise's 11th Calder Cup title.
JOHANSEN HITS 100:
This afternoon's contest marks the 100th professional game for Hershey defender Lucas Johansen. The British Columbia native has 10 points (one goal, nine assists) in 25 games this season with the Bears, and in his 99 games with the Chocolate and White, has collected 37 points (seven goals, 30 assists). Johansen was a first round draft pick of the Capitals, 28th overall, in the 2016 NHL Draft.
SHOOTOUT SUCCESS:
After another victory last night, Hershey has won its past five games that have gone to a shootout. Bears goaltenders have been exceptional in shootouts this season, stopping 34-of-39 attempts from opponents. The Bears, who have traditionally struggled in shootouts over the years, lead the league in shootout games played (10) and shootout victories (7). Today's opponent, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, are 5-2 in shootouts this season.
