February 24, 2019 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Laval Rocket News Release
LAVAL - The crowd of 7 638 chanting "let's go Rocket!" at Place Bell on Saturday afternoon gave Laval the fuel they needed to hold on to a tight 3-1 victory over the Manitoba Moose, and allowed the Rocket to secure their second win against Manitoba in as many days. Dale Weise scored the first goal for the Rocket with Michael Chaput netting the gamewinner, and Alex Kile the assurance goal.
Just like they did in their game against the Moose yesterday, the Rocket's special teams got them on the board first. Chaput went on a shorthanded two-on-one with Weise and Weise's wrist shot beat Manitoba's Mikhail Berdin, giving Weise his third as a Rocket. Felix Girard tied the game up by period's end for the Moose however by tucking a rebound by Charlie Lindgren, who made 31 saves in the Rocket's win.
Lindgren and Berdin went head-to-head in a goaltending battle in the second period, with Lindgren turning away 12 shots to keep the game tied at one. Berdin robbed Cale Fleury with his glove early in the period and then took a goal away from Chaput with his blocker, and Lindgren shut the door with his pad on a Marko Dano one-timer on the powerplay.
Chaput gave the Rocket a 2-1 lead early in the third period as Alex Belzile intercepted Berdin's pass from behind the net and sent it to Chaput, who shot it before Berdin could fully get back into position. Kile doubled the Rocket's lead on a breakaway with a little over seven minutes remaining in the period to make it 3-1, which held until the final buzzer.
"We knew that [Berdin] was good at playing the puck and those are little things that we practice," explained Belzile in reference to his assist on the game-winning goal. "I kind of anticipated the puck going there and I trusted that Chaput would be in the slot to make it 2-1."
