Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Playoff Bound!
The Aberdeen IronBirds' win over the Lowell Spinners, 7-3 clinched their first trip to the playoffs in franchise history. The second place Brooklyn Cyclones fell to the Tri-City ValleyCats 3-1 earlier in the evening, setting the stage for the 'Birds to clinch the McNamara Division Championship in game one of their three-game, regular season finale with Lowell. The IronBirds cruised to their 38th win of the season, using early offense and a group effort from the pitching staff to get the clinching win. They scored two runs in the first, second and sixth innings and one in the eighth inning. Steve Brault and Jon Keller pitched three innings each while Jose Figuereo pitched one and Jimmy Yacabonis pitched two to get the save.
Bierfeldt Named NYPL Player of the Week
Today the NYPL announced that left fielder Conor Bierfeldt was named NYPL Offensive Player of the Week for the week of August 26th through September 2nd. During that stretch, Bierfeldt played in eight games, hitting for a .344 batting average (11-32) with four home runs and nine RBI. He had four multi-hit games and multi-RBI games, helping the IronBirds to a 5-3 record over the stretch of games.
Records Made To Be Broken
There have been multiple team records that have been broken this season by IronBirds players and there are a few that could be topped in the final two regular season games. Conor Bierfeldt's 12 home runs are tied for the single-season record set by David Anderson in 2010. Trey Mancini's 82 hits are one shy of the single-season record of 83 set by Kipp Shultz also in 2010. Mancini's .324 batting average on the season would top Schultz' .316 mark also set in 2010. As a team, Aberdeen's run differential of +31 would top the previous best mark of +24 set in 2006.
On the mound tonight...
Orioles RHP Jason Hammel makes the start tonight for the IronBirds. Hammel is making his second rehab start as he recovers from a right flexor mass strain. He made his first rehab start with the Double A Bowie Baysox, pitching 2 2/3 scoreless innings. He was retroactively placed on the Orioles 15-Day DL on July 29th. The Spinners will send RHP Teddy Stankiewicz to the mound. Stankiewicz has pitched in eight games (all starts), pitching a total of 16 2/3 innings to the tune of a 1.08 ERA and has not factored in a decision. He has not been allowed to pitch anymore than three innings in any outing thus far.
