Voit's Late Hit Gives Spikes 3-1 Win over Jammers
September 3, 2013 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
State College Spikes News Release
JAMESTOWN, NY - Luke Voit got the first hit of the game for the State College Spikes, and his two-out, two-run single in the eighth inning was the Spikes' biggest hit in a 3-1 victory over the Jamestown Jammers on Tuesday night at Russell Diethrick Park in the next-to-last game of the 2013 regular season.
Despite the State College (48-26) win, Jamestown (42-32) remained a game ahead of Lowell for the New York-Penn League's Wild Card bid. The Spikes will face the Wild Card team in the NYPL Semifinal Series starting on Friday night.
Voit stopped Jammers starter Cody Dickson's string of 11 straight batters retired to begin the game by rapping a single to center field and became the only Spike with multiple hits in the game when his single to right-center field broke a 1-1 tie in the eighth.
Cesar Valera also delivered a big hit for State College, as his solo home run over the left field wall off Jackson Lodge (4-5) in the sixth inning tied the game. Valera added a stolen base as well.
The game was delayed one hour at the outset as the field needed extra preparations due to on-and-off rain throughout the day in Jamestown. New Spikes addition Vaughn Bryan, who joined the club along with infielder Kenny Peoples-Walls a half-hour before first pitch, started in center field and delivered a double in the eighth to set up Voit's tie-breaking hit.
Spikes starter Andrew Pierce tossed four shutout frames to begin the game, yielding one hit and one walk. Chase Brookshire (1-0) followed Pierce and allowed the Jammers' only run, but gave up just two hits while striking out two over three innings of work to earn the win. Kyle Webb (2) allowed one hit and struck out one over two innings to pick up the save.
Lodge took the loss after being tagged for two of the Spikes' run on four hits over two-plus innings. The Jamestown reliever also struck out one. Dickson left the game after five innings having let up one hit and one walk while striking out five.
The Spikes will complete the 2013 regular season on Wednesday night against the Jammers in a 6:05 p.m. matchup at Russell Diethrick Park. Victories by State College and Lowell will put the Spinners into the playoffs, while any other outcome means the Spikes will return to Jamestown for Game One of the NYPL Semifinal Series on Friday.
State College will send right-hander Willy Paulino (2-2) to the mound, while Jamestown will go with right-hander Chad Kuhl (2-4).
