Hudson Valley Renegades News Release

WAPPINGERS FALLS, NY (September 3, 2013) - The Hudson Valley Renegades have shown that they match up very well with the Connecticut Tigers. For the second night in a row, Michael Johns and his team were up and ready in the final series of the year. On a night when the offense hit three home runs for just the second time, which included the first longballs for Thomas Milone and John Alexander, the pitching staff was equally as impressive. With the win, the team now has a chance to close out the regular season on Wednesday night on the plus side of .500.

The Tigers only run came in the first following a leadoff walk by Kasey Coffman and a one out double by Ben Verlander that put runners at second and third. A wild pitch by Jaime Schultz gave Connecticut an early 1-0 lead, but he retired the next two hitters in order to get out of the jam. Schultz put two more runners on and walked two more batters in the second, but he struck out Coffman swinging to finish with four in his first two innings of work.

In his first game with the Renegades, Milone was hit by a pitch from Alex Phillips with two outs in the third. The mistake cost the Tigers starter, who allowed a game-tying RBI double to Ariel Soriano that made it 1-1. Darryl George then grounded out to second to end the inning. Phillips came back by striking out the first two hitters in the bottom of the fourth before surrendering a double to Granden Goetzman. Looking for his 20th stolen base of the year, Goetzman broke for third but was thrown out by the catcher Chris Taladay to retire the side.

Milone and Soriano provided the punch in the sixth with back-to-back solo home runs off Phillips that put the Renegades in front 3-1. George was then hit by a pitch and moved to third on an error by second baseman Javier Azcona, which put runners at second and third with nobody out. Ryan McChesney grounded into a 4-3-2 double play, but Goetzman drove in the third run of the inning with an RBI single to give his team a three run lead.

The final run came in the Renegades seventh on John Alexander's solo home run to deep right that made it 5-1. Facing Will LaMarche in the eighth, Hudson Valley loaded the bases with one out but could not score. However, the four run lead was more than enough thanks to Colton Reavis and his four shutout innings of long relief. The scoreless stretch continued after Brad Schreiber closed the door on the Tigers in the eighth and ninth in which he allowed just one baserunner on a walk to Taladay.

NOTES: The last time the Renegades hit three home runs was in a 9-4 win in Staten Island in 12 innings on July 6...the home runs by Milone and Soriano mark the first time the team's gone back-to-back...Milone, the Rays 3rd round pick, hit his first professional home run after playing 40 games without one in the Gulf Coast League to start the season...the team had just five home runs at Dutchess Stadium through their first 36 home games...Reavis (3-1) won two of his last three appearances and allowed just two hits in 10.2 innings during that span...the Tigers have been held to just one run on six hits in the first two games of the series.

The 2013 season comes to a close on Wednesday night at 6:35 PM as the Renegades (37-37) look for the sweep. Chris Kirsch (3-3, 3.13 ERA) will take the hill in the final game of the series.
