Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
ABERDEEN, Md. -- Scott Kalush hit a three-run home run and scored the game-winning run on a dropped strike three to give the IronBirds their 39th win of the season, 8-7 over Lowell.
Kalush reached base on a hit by pitch with Elis Jimenez on the mound. Jimenez threw a wild pitch that allowed Kalush to advance to second base. After Josh Hart struck out, Justin Viele's soft groundout to short stop allowed Kalush to advance to third with two outs. Chance Sisco struckout swinging on what would have ended the inning, but the ball got away from Jake Romanski, bouncing all the way to the backstop. Romanski's throw to first was not in time, allowing Kalush to score the go-ahead run.
Kalush hit his second home run of the season, a game-tying three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game at seven. His shot into the visiting bullpen in left field, scored George Barber and Federico Castagnini. It came after the IronBirds gave up four runs to fall behind 7-4 in a sloppy top half of the sixth inning.
The game started off well for the IronBirds as Orioles rehabbing starting pitcher Jason Hammel got the start on the mound. He pitched a perfect first and second inning before giving up three hits and a run in the third inning. He left after four innings, giving up just the one run with a walk and two strike outs.
Manny Hernandez put the IronBirds on top in the first inning with his second home run of the season, a three-run line shot that scored Chance Sisco and Ronarsy Ledsma.
Austin Urban came into the game in the fifth inning and finished out for Aberdeen. He pitched five innings, giving up six runs -- only one of them earned -- on seven hits and a walk. He struck out four hitters while picking up his third win of the season.
The IronBirds (39-32) finish out the regular season tomorrow night as they go for a sweep of the Lowell Spinners (40-32). Southpaw Mitch Horacek (5-4, 3.02 ERA) makes the start for Aberdeen. Lefty Corey Littrell (0-3, 2.03 ERA) will get the start for Lowell.
