CMC-NorthEast Stadium - Kannapolis, N.C.

Game #41

RH Thaddius Lowry (0-0, 0.00) vs. RH Cole Wiper (1-5, 4.13)

Today's Preview: Thaddius Lowry makes his Class A debut as the Intimidators (A, White Sox) welcome the Crawdads (A, Rangers) back to CMC-NorthEast Stadium for the third time in 2014. Lowry joined the team from Extended Spring Training earlier in the week to take the roster spot of Tyler Danish, who earned a promotion to High-A Winston-Salem. Kannapolis comes into today's game on the heels of a series loss to Delmarva after losing both games of Friday's doubleheader while Hickory has won three of their last five but dropped nine of their last 13 since May 4. The Intimidators lead the season series over their in-state rival, 6-4. The Crawdads will get the first glimpse of Lowry, who is making his season debut today, while the Intimidators will face Cole Wiper for the fourth time.

Intimidating Starter: Thaddius Lowry, 19, makes his Class A debut after joining the Intimidators on May 16 from Extended Spring. The White Sox fifth round pick in the June 2013 First-Year Player Draft made his professional debut last summer in the Advanced Rookie Appalachian League with Bristol, going 3-5 with a 5.48 ERA in 15 games (seven starts). Lowry began last season in the Bristol bullpen, going 1-2 with a 6.35 ERA in eight relief appearance before moving into the rotation and going 2-3 with a 5.18 ERA in seven starts. His last outing of 2013 was perhaps his best as Lowry worked a career-high 6.0 scoreless innings in a win on Aug. 27 against Burlington. He struck out a career-high five in a relief appearance on July 9 against Danville. The Sox selected Lowry out of Spring (Texas) High School.

Hickory's Hurler: Cole Wiper, 21, makes his eighth start and fourth against Kannapolis. He is 1-2 with a 2.13 ERA (3 ER/12.2 IP) with 12 strikeouts and six walks in three starts against the Intimidators, while Kannapolis is batting .229 (11-48) against him. Hickory's Opening Day starter is coming off four straight losses and is now tied for the SAL lead with five losses in 2014. His last outing (7 runs in 6.0 IP against Augusta) caused a spike in his ERA, from 2.70 to 4.13. The Rangers selected him in the 10th round of the June 2013 draft out of the University of Oregon where the right-hander went 2-1 with a 7.11 ERA in seven games (three starts) in 2013. He made his professional debut last season with the AZL Rangers, going 3-1 with a 2.13 ERA in 10 games (two starts), striking out 26 batters over 25.1 innings. The Bellevue, Wash., native graduated from Newport High School.

About Last Night: The Shorebirds swept a doubleheader to claim a series win over the Intimidators on Friday, taking Game 1 by a score of 5-2 then earning a 4-2 win in Game 2. In both games, Kannapolis built a 2-0 lead before seeing the Shorebirds scored all their runs unanswered to snatch the victories. In Game 1, James Dykstra worked five scoreless innings before giving up two runs in the sixth. Delmarva then claimed the lead in the seventh With men in scoring position and one out, Drew Dosch flew out to left field, but Kale Kiser's throw home was dropped by Omar Narvaez, allowing the go-ahead run to score. Trey Mancini added an RBI-triple then scored on a Josh Hart base hit for a 5-2 lead. Sebastian Vader, who has no relation to any Dark Sith Lords, earned a complete game win. In Game 2, Dosch hit a 2-run home run in the extra-inning eighth to provide the difference. Zach Voight hit a home run put the Intimidators ahead 2-0 in the second inning. Andre Wheeler matched career-highs with six strikeouts in five innings of work. Matt Abramson, who had not previously allowed a run all season, took the loss.

Double Trouble: The Intimidators suffered a doubleheader sweep on Friday for the first time since July 23, 2013, at West Virginia. Kannapolis had previously split all five doubleheaders it had played in 2014 and is now 5-7 in twin bills this season. The team's six doubleheaders are the most in the SAL in 2014.

Alive Thru Five: James Dykstra pitched five scoreless innings to begin a game for the third time in the first game of Friday's doubleheader. Dykstra's ERA through the first five innings is now 2.06 (8 ER/35 IP) compared to 14.29 (9 ER/5.2 IP) from the sixth inning on.

Wheeling & Dealing: Andre Wheeler matched his career high with 5.0 innings of work in the second game of Friday's twin bill. He also equaled his career-high of six strikeouts which he set in his previous outing, a spot-start against Hagerstown on May 11.

Hot-Hitting Hayes: Danny Hayes opened the second game of Friday's doubleheader 3-3 at the plate with three singles. The Shorebirds intentionally walked the Intimidators No. 3 hitter in his fourth at bat when Kannapolis had the game-winning run on second base in the bottom of the seventh inning. Hayes now has two 3-hit games on the season and six in his career. He has yet to record a 4-hit game.

Broadcast: Today's game will be broadcast live on IntimidatorsBaseball.com beginning at 6:50 p.m. Josh Feldman will broadcast all 70 home games and select road games in 2014.
