Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (May 17, 2014) - The Hickory Crawdads used a pair of home runs to blast past the Kannapolis Intimidators, 4-1, on Saturday at CMC-NorthEast Stadium in the first game of a 4-game series. Kannapolis (20-21) managed just three hit on the night, a season-low in a 9-inning game, while falling below .500 for the first time since May 3.
Nick Vickerson put Hickory (19-22) on the board by leading off the fourth inning by driving the first pitch over the left-center field wall for a home run (3). In the sixth, Vickerson scored on a wild pitch for a 2-0 lead. Kellin Deglan added a 2-run home run (4) in the seventh inning to double Hickory's lead to 4-0.
Crawdads starter Cole Wiper blanked the Intimidators over 5 and 2/3 innings, allowing just one hit - a Zach Voight single with two outs in the fourth. Wiper (2-5) struck out six and walked four in his fourth start against Kannapolis. Ricardo Rodriguez came on in relief to work 2 and 1/3 scoreless frames.
Thaddius Lowry worked 5.0 solid innings in his season debut, allowing one run on three hits with four strikeouts and no walks while taking a loss. Lowry (0-1), the White Sox fifth round pick in the June 2013 First-Year Player Draft, joined the Intimidators on Thursday when Tyler Danish was promoted to Class A-Advanced Winston-Salem.
Kannapolis threatened in the ninth inning when Carl Thomore and Omar Narvaez drew 1-out walks off Ryan Harvey. The Crawdads went to the bullpen, and Cody Kendall was able to record the final two outs for the save (1). Tyler Shryock broke up the shutout with an RBI-fielders choice in the ninth inning.
The Intimidators and Crawdads play Game 2 of this 4-game series on Sunday at 5:05 p.m. All Sunday games are Kid's Day presented by Cornerstone Church featuring pre-game player autographs and post-game kids run the bases, plus all kids tickets are $5.
