From the Notes

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: Gwinnett improved to 8-2 against Indy in 2018 with a 4-2 walk-off win last night. The Indians never led for a fourth consecutive game en route to their fourth straight loss. Indy's offense remained cold; the Tribe had just three hits in 30 total at-bats, their lowest hit total since they had three hits in a 4-0 loss to Toledo on June 11 at Victory Field. The Stripers grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first on a two-out single by Dustin Peterson that scored Michael Reed who had singled and stolen second base to begin the inning. Sean Kazmar Jr. then doubled and scored on a Luis Marte single in the fourth that put Indy in a 2-0 hole. The Tribe dug out in the fifth when Stripers starter Max Fried exited at 75 pitches and 4.2 innings of work. Facing right-handed reliever Elian Leyva, Brandon Waddell singled, Kevin Newman walked and Adam Frazier laced a two-run double to left-center to even the score. Dovydas Neverauskas fired 2.2 shutout frames in relief to keep the game tied, but Jesus Liranzo allowed a double to Reed and two-run homer to Rio Ruiz in the ninth, giving the Stripers their fifth consecutive victory.

WALKED OFF x3: The Indians have lost in walk-off fashion three times this season. Their first walk-off defeat came on May 16 at Norfolk. Jordan Luplow tied the game at 3-3 with a three-run homer in the top of the ninth, but Renato Nunez delivered a walk-off RBI single in the bottom half to hand Indy a 4-3 loss. Indy's second walk-off loss came in Columbus on June 30 after they dug out of an early seven-run deficit to eventually tie the game at 9-9 on a Jackson Williams two-out, two-run homer in the ninth. Yu Chang hit a home run off Josh Smoker to end that game. Then last night, the Indians trailed 2-0 before evening the score at 2-2 on Frazier's two-run double in the fifth, only to see Ruiz crank a two-run homer off Jesus Liranzo in the ninth.

HOME COOKIN': Adam Frazier, a native of Athens, Ga., has impressed in the current series, despite Indy dropping each of the first three games. The utilityman is batting .375 (3-for-8) with two doubles, three walks, one hit by pitch, a sacrifice fly and two strikeouts. He has driven in four runs and scored twice.

IL SOUTH STRUGGLES: Last night's loss sealed a losing record for Indianapolis against IL South opponents in 2018. The Indians are 12-17 against the IL South with four games remaining -- one tonight vs. Gwinnett and three in Charlotte this weekend. Indy had never lost the season series to the IL South as an affiliate of the Pirates prior to this season. Indy has finished below .500 against the IL South now six times since 1998. They went 22-26 in each of 1998, 1999, 2001, 2003 and 2004. The '98 and '99 campaigns were Reds-affiliated seasons while the '01, '03 and '04 seasons were Brewers-affiliated campaigns.

43 UP, 43 DOWN: The Indians and Stripers are in their 10th season of playing one another. Thanks to Gwinnett's 8-2 record against the Tribe this season, the all-time series is now an even 43-43, despite Indy having won the season series over Gwinnett four times and losing the season set just twice since 2009. The two teams have split their season series four times (2010, 2011, 2015, 2016). The Indians have never been swept in a four-game series by the Stripers in the 10-year, head-to-head history of Indy and Gwinnett.

NEED 10-PLUS HITS: The Indians have gone a season-high 12 straight games by having nine hits or less offensively, but they've still managed to go 6-6 during that stretch. The cold stretch offensively (.231, 87-for-376) has featured just 29 extra-base hits (2.4 per game), well below their season average of 3.4 extra-base hits per contest through their first 82 games (280 XBHs). When posting single-digit hit totals, the Tribe are 24-35 this season; they're 26-9 when recording 10 or more hits.
