Clippers Finish Series on High Note

July 19, 2018 - International League (IL1)
Columbus Clippers News Release

The Columbus Clippers finished their series with the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs off with a win tonight at Huntington Park, salvaging the series after dropping games one and two.

An early homerun and the quality bullpen performance did the job, as the Clippers prevailed, 2-1.

It took a two-out rally, but the Clippers scored all they'd need in the second inning. With two outs, Mike Papi battled back in the count against Iron Pigs' starter Tom Eshelman, finally reaching on a single. The next batter, Eric Stamets, did the same thing, working the count full after fouling off four straight pitches before leaving the yard to make it 2-0.

The Iron Pigs fought back with one run in the third after Adron Chambers led off with a triple against Columbus starter Stephen Fife. With Chambers situated on third, Matt McBride grounded to Stamets at short to sore the run, making it 2-1.

That would be it for the league-leading Iron Pigs, though, as the Jon Edwards, Josh Martin and George Kontos made good on Fife's strong start to secure the win.

Fife went five innings and surrendered just the one run on three hits. He walked one and struck out five.

The Clippers will welcome the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders for the first of a four-game series tomorrow at Huntington Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
