Rochester Red Wings News Release
The Norfolk Tides swept the Rochester Red Wings/Plates with a pair of 1-0 wins, in a Thursday night doubleheader at Frontier Field.
Game One:
Rochester starting pitcher Kohl Stewart needed only six pitches to retire the side in the first inning but struggled in the second. After allowing a pair of singles to Chance Sisco and Garabez Rosa with one away, the Tides took a 1-0 lead after Sisco scored on a sacrifice fly from Drew Dosch.
The second inning sacrifice fly was the only run the Tides needed as Norfolk starting pitcher John Means allowed only one hit through the first three innings of the ball game.
The Red Wings threatened in the fourth following back-to-back singles from Nick Gordon and Gregorio Petit to lead off the inning. After the pair reached base, Means shut down the Rochester threat by striking out the next three batters to come to the plate.
After a scoreless sixth inning, Stewart's night ended. He tossed 6.0 innings allowing one run on three hits while walking two and striking out eight. Stewart threw 98 pitches, 61 for strikes. After allowing 10 runs on 17 hits over his first two starts this season with Rochester (11.0 innings), Stewart has given up only 10 hits resulting in two runs over his last two starts for the Wings (12.0 innings).
Nick Anderson pitched a scoreless seventh inning, working around a two-out single from Dosch.
Means finished the game for Norfolk tossing a seven-inning complete game shutout. He allowed just three hits over the course of the ball game while striking out six. Means threw 100 pitches, 61 for strikes.

Game Two:
Suited up as the Rochester Plates for Game Two of the double-header, DJ Baxendale got the ball as the spot-starter for the "road" team. Game Two was a makeup from the postponement on June 3rd at Norfolk.
After allowing a walk in the first inning and a single in the third, Norfolk starter and former Red Wing Sean Gilmartin was able to get Rochester to hit into a pair of double plays to avoid further trouble. Gilmartin went 3.0 innings allowing no runs on one hit while striking out two and facing the minimum of nine batters. He threw 31 pitches, 21 for strikes.
Norfolk threatened in the fourth after Baxendale allowed a pair of hits to put runners on the corners to open the inning. Following a strikeout to Garabez Rosa, Baxendale was lifted from the game and replaced by Trevor May. With one out, Mike Yastremski lifted a ball to centerfield that was caught by Taylor Motter for the second out of the inning. Andrew Susac attempted to score on the play and was thrown out on a one-hop throw from Motter to cut down Susac and end the inning.
Baxendale went 3.1 innings allowing no runs on five hits while striking out four. He threw 45 pitches, 31 for strikes.
May retired seven of the eight batters he faced over 2.1 innings without allowing a hit. He struck out three and walked one. Gabriel Moya took over with two outs in the sixth and recorded a strikeout to send the game to the seventh.
Moya allowed a two-out hit in the bottom of the seventh, but a nifty defensive play by Kennys Vargas in foul ground ended the inning and sent the game in extras.
The Plates couldn't advance their placed runner at second base in the top of the eighth,after Ruben Tejada robbed Jon Kemmer of a hit for the third out.
The Tides had a bases loaded situation with one out in the bottom of the eighth, a result of a pair of intentional walks and a sacrifice bunt. A sacrifice fly brought in the winning run for the Tides.

NOTES: OF Jeremy Hazelbaker was acquired by the Twins from the Tampa Bay organization, and suited up for the Wings in the opener....Nick Gordon went 2-for-4 against left-hand pitching during the doubleheader and is now 20-for-60 (.333) against LHP this season... In the bottom of the sixth inning of Game One, Norfolk manager Ron Johnson was ejected after disputing a hit-by-pitch call.
THIS DAY IN RED WINGS HISTORY
1976 - Hall of famer Eddie Murray hit his first home run as a Red Wing with a three run shot in an 8-4 victory over the Memphis Blues in Blues Stadium. The 20 year old Murray also singled in 2 runs, giving him a total of 5 runs batted in on the day. The victory came in the second game of a double header which Rochester split with Memphis.

1999 - Coming off a 12-inning game the night before, facing an upcoming doubleheader, and having just lost ace Javier Vasquez to the parent Expos, Ottawa manager Jeff Cox desperately needs to get through a game at Syracuse without using his bullpen. Unfortunately, he can only turn to emergency starter Jeff Bennett (who has started only 10 of his 310 professional outings) and newly recalled Jayson Durocher, who has never pitched at the Triple-A level. This unlikely duo is more than up to the challenge. They combine for a 9-inning no-hitter, just the second in Lynx history. Bennett tosses five perfect innings, and Durocher issues just one walk while retiring 12 of the 13 batters he faces to record the save. Amazingly, the parents of both players are at the game in Syracuse, despite the fact Bennett is from Australia and Durocher is from Arizona.
