Gerber Blasts Two Bombs in Mud Hens Victory

July 19, 2018 - International League (IL1)
Toledo Mud Hens News Release

TOLEDO, Ohio - The Toledo Mud Hens opened up a four game series against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs at Fifth Third Field with a late rally that led to an exciting 4-3 win.

Mike Gerber did his part in the game driving not one, but two balls over the fence. Though he single-handedly brought the team back into the game, it was Christin Stewart who delivered the late inning lead.

Pitching reigned supreme in this fast-paced game. For Toledo, Tyler Alexander toed the rubber at the outset of the game. He lasted a career high 7.2 innings while giving up two runs, but neither was earned. The southpaw fanned four IronPig batters as well.

It was Blake Anderson who squared off against the Mud Hens offense. The Phillies number 21 prospect allowed only three hits. The two blemishes on his day were the two homeruns surrendered to Gerber.

Something rare happened during the game. With Alexander on the mound in the top of the seventh, Danny Ortiz attempted to steal second. As Grayson Greiner went to try and throw him out, the batter Nick Rickles was called for batter interference. That means the batter was out, and Ortiz missed out on his first steal of the season.

After Gerber launched his second bomb, Leonys Martin was standing on third as the go ahead run, and Stewart ripped a two out single up the middle to score both Martin and Dixon Machado.

Toledo entered the ninth inning ahead by two runs. Zac Reininger was on the mound when the Mud Hens took the lead, and he was given the chance to shut things down in the ninth inning.

Joey Meneses reached with a single to open the ninth, followed by a walk from Dylan Cozens. With no signs of reinforcements in the bullpen, the first out of the last inning was finally recorded when Matt McBride popped out in foul territory. Ortiz followed that up with a fly out to left. The next batter was pinch hitter Adron Chambers, who singled home a run.

With two outs and a one run lead, Ryan Goins strode to the plate. In a moment of poetic justice, he flew out to Gerber to end the game.
