Florence Freedom Right Fielder Mike Galloway's season opening hitting streak was halted at a Frontier League record tying 30 straight games Monday night in Evansville. Galloway went 0-4, striking out twice with a walk as the Freedom defeated the Otters 6-5 in the opening of a three game series. It was Florence's fourth win in a row, allowing them to remain a game back of Washington for first place in the Eastern Division. Galloway was the only Freedom starter to not collect a hit as Florence jumped out to a 6-1 lead and held on for the one run victory. Mark Harris was wild, but pitched well enough to win his fourth game without defeat. Harris walked 7 over 5 2/3 innings, allowing 3 runs, 1 earned. Florence's two most active relievers were no relief for Florence manager Jamie Keefe. Former closer Lenny Bays, now pitching in middle relief, allowed 2 runs in the 7th and Justin Fuller gave up two runs in the 8th. Ted Rowe came to the rescue to pick up his second save in four days, pitching an inning and a third scoreless baseball.
Galloway hitting streak tied the single season Frontier League record of 30 set by Michael Robertson of River City in 2001. Galloway continues to lead the Frontier league in all of the Triple Crown categories, hitting .405 with 13 home runs and 41 RBI for the season. The Freedom Right Fielder also leads the league with 51 hits, 23 extra base hits, and a .796 Slugging Percentage and is second in runs scored. Signed just before the season began, Galloway was selected in the 14th round of the 2002 MLB draft by Toronto. Galloway is from Ontario, played collegially at Miami University, as well as for Wareham in the prestigious Cape Cod League.
Freedom Flags - The Freedom completed a series of roster moves, strengthening the team's bench and solidifying the rotation. Florence re-singed former Freedom and UC Bearcat standout first baseman Matt Singer and traded for veteran independent league outfielder Darin Kinsolving from the Gary, Indiana SouthShore Rail Cats of the Northern League. Singer played for Florence in the 2003 season and was on the team's roster before this season began until he was traded to Windy City for a first round pick later moved to Chillicothe for catcher Scott Pickens. Singer was released by Windy City the day before the season started. Singer was the first UC player to earn first team All-Conference USA selections three years in a row and was signed in 2001 by the New York Yankees. Kinsolving will be on his third team of the season, having started the season with the Edmonton Cracker Cats, also of the Northern League. Before coming to Florence, Kinsolving was hitting .213 with 2 home runs and 12 RBI in 26 games between Edmonton and Gary. Kinsolving has played in independent baseball since 2000 and has spent time with River City and three seasons as the starting first baseman for Jamie Keefe in Chillicothe. Last year, Kinsolving played in Sioux City and Gary in the Northern League. Florence also signed former Kent State starting pitcher Jason Brunke, who made the start last Thursday in a tough loss to Mid-Missouri, 2-1. Brunke pitched 7 innings of 5 hit, 2 run baseball while striking out 10 and walking no one. Brunke took the starting spot of Kyle Geswein, who has found a home as a designated hitter and the roster spot of former starter Jason Sena.
