Grizzlies win in extra innings

The Gateway Grizzlies came back from a 4-2 deficit to force extra innings Tuesday night in Crestwood, IL. They then added four in the top of the 10th to take the second of a three-game series with Windy City, 7-4, in front of 1,277 at Hawkinson Ford Field.

The Grizzlies are now 11-21. Windy City is 10-22.

The Grizzlies got 10th inning RBIs from Freddy Lopez, Gary Gilbert and Mike Breyman. Breyman was 2-4 with two RBIs including a solo home run.

Trailing 4-2, the Grizzlies scored a pair in the top of the seventh ti tie it. They got the home run Breyman and a sacrifice fly by Eric Sansouci. Sansouci already had an RBI on a single in the third. Sansouci was 1-4 with the two RBIs.

In the bottom of the eighth with one out, the ThunderBolts put runners at first and second. Pinch hitter Justin Niefer dropped a single into left. Sansouci came up and fired a perfect strike to the plate, nailing a runner and preserving the tie score.

Matt Powell earned his first win, in relief, for the Grizzlies. Powell (1-2) pitched three scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and striking out two. Ryan Hamilton pitched a perfect 10th for his third save of the year. David Smith started for the Grizzlies and went six innings. Smith allowed four runs, two earned on eight hits. He struck out four.

The Grizzlies and ThunderBolts will play the rubber match Wednesday afternoon in Crestwood, IL. Game time is 12:05 p.m. Fans can tune in on 1490 AM WESL and the Grizzlies radio network
