Windy City ThunderBolts News Release
Crestwood, IL - The Windy City ThunderBolts dropped the second game of a three game series against the Gateway Grizzlies on Tuesday night, this one by a score of 7-4 in ten innings.
After falling down 2-0 in the third, the ThunderBolts scored two of their own. Center fielder Jerome McCoy led off the bottom of the third inning with a bunt single up the first base line. Shortstop Scott Vetter knocked a single to right. On an attempted steal by Vetter, the throw got away from the catcher. McCoy scored from third and Vetter moved from second to third. A fielder's choice by right fielder Nick Johnson brought Vetter home to score.
The ThunderBolts took a brief lead in the bottom half of the sixth. Designated hitter Justin Schuda clubbed his second double of the night. Johnson, who had previously singled, came around to score. First baseman Ryan Andrews worked Grizzlies' starter David Smith for a two-out walk. Catcher Jason Alcott nailed a single to center, plating Schuda and giving the Bolts a 4-2 advantage.
Gateway added two more in the top half of the next frame. Grizzlies' designated hitter Mike Breyman led off by slicing a homer over the fence in right-center. An RBI sacrifice fly by Eric Sansouci scored third baseman Brandon Averill to tie the game at 4-4.
Windy City almost took the lead in the bottom of the eighth, but pinch runner Jose Gutierrez was gunned down at the plate on a laser thrown by Sansouci in left.
The Grizzlies knocked around reliever Steve Ziroli in the top of the tenth, striking for three runs. A lead off single by Jimmy Reiter and an intentional walk to Ben Margalski put two on with one out. A single by Freddy Lopez scored Reiter. Second baseman Gary Gilbert drove home Margalski and a single by Breyman pushed across the third run of the inning to make it a 7-4 final.
ThunderBolts' starter Ryan Dittfurth lasted six and one-third innings, allowing four runs on four hits and hit four batters. Dittfurth remains at 1-3 on the season. Taking the loss for Windy City was reliever Steve Ziroli. Ziroli's record drops to 0-3 on the season. Earning the win for Gateway was reliever Matt Powell, bettering his record to 1-2. Ryan Hamilton picked up the save, his third.
The ThunderBolts and Grizzlies round out their three game set on Wednesday with a special 12:05 matinee. Taking the hill for the ThunderBolts will be right hander Mike Renery (3-3, 2.95). Renery will face off against right-hander Erik Dessau (0-0, 7.36).
