Kingston Frontenacs News Release
The Frontenacs played a pair of high-scoring games over the past week, with one of the more emotional home dates in Kingston's hockey history coming last Saturday as the team honoured Larry Mavety at the Leon's Centre.
Generally speaking It was the annual Special Olympics night at the rink last Friday, with the Fronts joining the Kingston Police for awareness and support.
The Oshawa Generals made the trip to the Limestone City and left victorious in the first of 12 matchups between the East Division rivals of the 2021-22 OHL season. The visitors took a commanding four goal lead in the opening period with Kingston battling back within one goal before a late tally by the Gennies Cooper sealed Oshawa's two-goal 6-4 win. Defenceman Lucas Peric (2nd Star) had a pair of goals on five shots with Martin Chromiak, Jordan Frasca (1G,1A), Lucas Edmonds (2A), each having multi-point games.
Frontenacs rookie scoring leader Matthew Soto had an assist to place him fourth in OHL freshman scoring 14 points. The Oakville, On native sits third overall in OHL rookie assists (10). Peric's two goals tied him for third in OHL blueline tallies (4).
Memory of Mav
A memorable and touching pre-game tribute and continual game-filled video messages from former players to the legendary "Mav" highlighted a great day in The Limestone City on Saturday. Sherry Bassin, Brian Kilrea, Team President/Governor Doug Springer, GM Kory Cooper, head coach Luca Caputi all shared their thoughts and memories before the game. Former players Anthony and Chris Stewart, Keli Corpse, Andrew Raycroft, and Michael Zigomanis expressed their emotional views via jumbotron, amongst others in attendance.
On a CBC nationally televised game, the Frontenacs returned to the ice less than 24 hours after losing to Oshawa for a wild matinee with the Mississauga Steelheads. Leevi Meriläinen stopped all three shots, and Captain Shane Wright scored his league-leading second shootout goal, capping off a comeback win on Larry Mavety Day in Kingston. It was the third game in the last four the Black and Gold went extra-time. The visitors took a 2-0 lead in the first period on a 13-3 shot advantage before a wild six-goal third culminated with a 5-4 shootout victory marking the first win for Kingston over Mississauga in three tries.
The letters "MAV" are now etched in Kingston's ice as a monumental token for all players and fans to see at future games in tribute. The pre-game ceremony attended by wife Brenda and family was touching as the team looked back on the times of one of the most influential people in OHL hockey history.
Haché Highlight
Defenceman Braden Haché was named the third star after recording his first OHL goal in the third period during the emotional day; "It was another huge team win for us getting down and battling back, especially on a night like tonight. There were many emotions in the building, so coming back and getting the win today was huge for us. That was for Mav."
The Florida Panthers draft pick (2021/7th-rd.) usually has Fronts fans cheering after another big hit but today scored an essential tying goal. The bruising defender had four shots-on-goal and prevented a great scoring opportunity in the defensive zone late in the game, finishing plus-two. It was 3-2 at the time, and to get the 3-3 goal was pretty surreal. It's been a bit of a long time coming for me, and I am just really proud of the boys today."
On Haché, Assistant Captain Lucas Edmonds says, "He's definitely not one of our guys that will score every game, but he really deserves it. He puts in the work, a big body likes to hit and gives us a lot of energy from those things, and so it was awesome to see him get that first one."
Callens Came Calling
Maddox Callens took exception to a hit by Riley Pitt in the game last Friday versus Oshawa and proved the team's tightness by taking on the four inch larger defenceman in a spirited tilt. Earning the BMW Kingston Hardest Worker Award, the Lambton, ON native has always had the propensity to get in the dirty areas of the game and never quits on a play. This season, the gritty winger (second in KGN pims - 15) shows off some much-needed secondary offence tied for fifth in Fronts goals (4), including two on the powerplay, with eight points in 12 games.
Mainly Meriläinen
Meriläinen is the only OHL goaltender to stop the six shots he's faced over two shootouts early in the season. The Finnish netminder has a calming influence on his teammates with an ability to keep the game calm at times of stress. "No matter the situation, I don't think anyone has seen him get rattled," said Haché. "He is always even keeled and always focusing on just continuing to play. I am proud of how he's playing now; he's been a big addition this year for us. Confidence in the pipes is huge. It bleeds a lot on the team, and it's how we feel with Leevi and Aidan (Spooner)."
The Ottawa Senators prospect sits tied for fourth in the OHL with seven goalie wins. "Leevi has been great," said Edmonds. "He's been extremely helpful for us. We feel safe when he is in the net even if we end up in a shootout; we know he'll help us out. Without him, we wouldn't have come away with a win today (versus Steelheads)."
Electrifying Edmonds
With four points against the Steelheads (1G,3A), Edmonds moved into third overall in the OHL (24), fifth in assists (15), and fourth in shots (65). The overage rookie has four goals and 11 points riding a current five game point streak. He said, "We definitely like to have better starts, but I think we show a lot of character. As a team, fighting adversity and coming back and getting a big win (versus Mississauga) is important."
The North Bay, Ontario born overager deserves plenty of credit, potting the late game tying goal on Saturday on CBC. The high IQ forward showed off his two-way game stealing the puck off a defender in the Steelhead zone just before firing a shot on the net, deflecting off a player and finding its way in. "After we got the puck in deep," Edmonds said, "I was able to steal the puck, and my thought was just to get a quick shot on net. I kind of got lucky to hit a shin pad on the way, so it felt nice to see it go in."
Ritchie Buzzes West
General Manager Kory Cooper made his first transaction in an active season trading defenceman Ethan Ritchie on Monday, Nov 15. Kingston acquired the former OHL 5th-rd selection (Erie Otters - 2018) on waivers on Oct 4, 2019 signing with the club two weeks later. The Oakville Rangers product played 47 games in Kingston, registering three goals and nine points. The smooth skater had a goal and an assist through 12 games before the transaction.

In return, the Frontenacs receive a seventh round selection in 2023.
