Gwinnett Stripers News Release

The Lead: The Gwinnett Braves went with striking pink jerseys to support cancer research, but it was a stunning Pawtucket comeback that led to a 5-3 loss on Friday night at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville, GA. The game was highlighted by the return to action of Atlanta Braves catcher Brian McCann on an ML Rehab, playing DH and going 1-for-3 with an RBI. The G-Braves (66-54) remain in second place in the International League South at two games behind Durham. Gwinnett is also second in the Wild Card race by a 1.5 game margin behind Lehigh Valley. The Red Sox (68-51) remain in first place in the IL North.

It Was Over When: Gwinnett took a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the 8th inning after a Wilkin Ramirez go-ahead homer, but that's when the Braves bullpen unraveled. Jaye Chapman allowed three singles and a walk in the top of the 9th to give the lead back at 4-3 and a passed ball sent home the final run for Pawtucket.

Braves Beat:

On the Mound: Starting RHP Julio Teheran went 7.0 IP, yielding 2 R/ER without a BB and 5 K's in a no-decision. The G-Braves ace broke a stretch of back-to-back 4 ER games with his lowest run total yielded since his streak of 10 starts without more than 2 R in a start from 6/4/11-7/26/11. RHP Chapman (1-3) went 1.2 IP, allowing 3 R/ER with a BB and 2 K's in defeat.

At the Plate: McCann's second-ever trip to Gwinnett (also played in a rehab game on 5/7/09) put a nice charge in the G-Braves offense, and he was removed from the game in the 6th inning healthy and ready to return tomorrow. Ramirez, playing LF tonight, finished up 1-for-4 with a HR, RBI and a SB. Gwinnett's third RBI came from 3B Ruben Gotay, who was 1-for-4 on the night.

The Opposition:

On the Mound: Red Sox starting RHP Tony Pena, Jr., went 5.0 IP, allowing 1 R, BB and K apiece while scattering 6 H in the no decision. RHP Jason Rice (4-4) went 2.1 IP, yielding a R/ER with a BB and 3 K's to pick up the victory. RHP Scott Atchinson went a scoreless 9th inning for his 4th save.

At the Plate: Pawtucket got a 1-for-5, 2 RBI night from CF Che-Hsuan Lin and a 4-for-4 game from 3B Hector Luna.

On Deck: The G-Braves take on Pawtucket in the second game of this series and four game homestand against the Red Sox, Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. Gwinnett will send out RHP Todd Redmond (8-8, 2.91) against Paw Sox RHP Kyle Weiland (8-7, 3.23). Tomorrow night is also "Paint the Park Purple" night in continuation with cancer Awareness Weekend at Coolray Field. Fans are encouraged to wear purple to raise awareness for Gwinnett's successful Relay For Life campaign, as the stadium shows support for cancer survivors and in remembrance of those who lost the battle. The game can be heard on the voice of the Gwinnett Braves, WDUN 550 AM and 102.9 FM. Fans can also follow at www.twitter.com/GwinnettBraves1, gametracker on www.gwinnettbraves.com or MiLB TV at www.MiLB.com .

Etc: Tonight, the G-Braves wore special pink jerseys to not only support Gwinnett Medical Center's drive for cancer research and awareness, but also had the players take the "jerseys off their backs" for an in-game charity auction. The auction raised $8,375 for cancer research, including Atlanta Braves catcher Brian McCann's jersey going for $2,500.
