Chiefs knock off Yankees 7-4

Syracuse Mets News Release
After a dominant start by Brad Peacock, the Syracuse Chiefs (53-65), the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, pulled away from the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees (62-58) for a 7-4 win Friday at Alliance Bank Stadium. The Yankees pulled within one after Peacock's exit, but the Chiefs used a four-run eighth inning to put the game out of reach. After Peacock started the game by retiring the side with two strikeouts in the first, the Chiefs propped the righty to an early lead. A leadoff triple from Steve Lombardozzi and RBI doubles from Chris Marrero and Tug Hulett put Syracuse up 2-0 in the first. The lead could have been more, too, but Hulett was thrown out at home by Yankees left fielder Greg Golson to end the inning. Peacock got some help from his defense in the second. With runners on first and second, Jordan Parraz grounded a single to right field. Jeff Frazier scooped up the ground ball and threw a dart to Jhonatan Solano at the plate. Solano twirled around to make the tag and keep Scranton/Wilkes-Barre scoreless early. Other than that play from Frazier and Solano, Peacock didn't need much help from his teammates. He struck out the side in the third and retired the side in order again in the fourth. Syracuse added one more run in the bottom of the fourth. The Chiefs loaded the bases with one out against Yankees starter Manuel Banuelos. Frazier then lofted a sacrifice fly to right field that brought home Jesus Valdez for the 3-0 lead. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre finally got on the board in the sixth when Jesus Montero hit a solo home run over the left-center field wall. Peacock gave up two more singles in the frame before Ryan Tatusko took over on the mound. Peacock lasted five and two-thirds innings, gave up the one run on seven hits and struck out nine. Tatusko got the final out of the sixth against the first batter he faced and then sat Scranton/Wilkes-Barre down in order in the seventh. But the Yankees pulled a little closer after J.D. Martin took over in the next inning. They started the eighth with three straight singles to load the bases. Martin induced a double play from Jorge Vazquez in the next at-bat, but Chris Dickerson came home to score and pull Scranton/Wilkes-Barre within 3-2. Martin then struck out Terry Tiffee to end the inning and keep Syracuse in front. But that was as close as the Yankees would get. Marrero started the bottom of the frame with a walk and advanced to third on Hulett's double off the right field wall. With the infield in, Solano tagged a grounder off Doug Bernier's glove at shortstop to score Marrero. That chased Scranton/Wilkes-Barre reliever Josh Schmidt from the mound, but righty Kevin Whelan couldn't stop the Chiefs either. He walked Seth Bynum to load the bases, and Frazier hit his second sacrifice fly to right field to put the Chiefs up 5-2. The run continued with two outs on the board when Corey Brown lined a single over Bernier that brought home Solano and Bynum for a 7-2 lead. That four-run eighth ultimately put the game out of reach. The Yankees gave Martin a scare with two runs in the ninth, but the righthander struck out Montero to end the game. The Chiefs will battle Scranton/Wilkes-Barre again Saturday at 7:00 at Alliance Bank Stadium. Syracuse lefty Tommy Milone will take the mound against Yankees southpaw Greg Smith.
