Gwinnett Stripers News Release

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA - The Gwinnett Braves (76-67) manufactured runs in the third and fourth innings and rode great pitching to a 2-1 victory over the Charlotte Knights (74-69) on Sunday at Coolray Field.

The win kept the G-Braves' chances to win the International League South Division alive for at least a few more hours. Gwinnett cut their deficit behind first-place Norfolk (77-65) to 1.5 games, but the Tides were not scheduled to play the Durham Bulls until 5:05 p.m. on Sunday. A Norfolk win at Durham would eliminate the G-Braves from playoff contention.

All of the scoring on Sunday came in a two-inning span. Gwinnett took a 1-0 lead in the third, Charlotte tied the game 1-1 in the top of the fourth and the G-Braves regained the lead with a run in the bottom half of the fourth.

Jordan Lennerton began what was the game-winning rally with a leadoff walk from Charlotte right-handed starter Kyle Drabek. He moved to second base when Barrett Kleinknecht reached on an infield single. Both runners grabbed an extra base on the play when Knights' shortstop Drew Garcia threw wide of second base in an attempt to throw out Lennerton. He scored when Mycal Jones grounded out to shortstop in the next at-bat.

Braeden Schlehuber scored Gwinnett's first run on a double play grounder to shortstop from Joey Terdoslavich. Schlehuber had opened the third with an infield single off Drabek and advanced to third when Garcia made his first error of the game on a ball hit by Mallex Smith.

The Knights tied the game briefly at 1-1 with a three-hit top of the fourth inning against G-Braves' right-handed starter Victor Mateo. Jason Coats and Dayan Viciedo began the frame with back-to-back singles, and Coats scored on a single to center field by Matt Tuiasosopo.

Mateo (W, 4-3) preserved that lead through his final two innings of work. He finished 6.0 innings with one run and seven hits allowed, no walks and six strikeouts in 83 pitches, 57 strikes. Righty Vin Mazzaro (H, 3) faced the minimum in his 2.0 innings, which included a walk and three strikeouts. Right-hander David Peterson (S, 2) gave up a one-out single in the ninth but induced two consecutive groundouts to end the game.

Drabek (L, 7-11) allowed two unearned runs over 7.0 innings for Charlotte. He gave up four hits and walked four batters around three strikeouts in 89 pitches, 52 strikes. Right-handed reliever Blake Smith struck out two batters for a scoreless eighth in his only inning of work.

No Gwinnett batter had multiple hits, but Cedric Hunter and Sean Kazmar both reached base twice. Hunter was 1-for-3 with a walk, and Kazmar finished 1-for-2 with a walk.

Charlotte doubled Gwinnett's hit total with eight on the day, although none went for extra bases. Viciedo singled in the first three of his four at-bats to finish 3-for-4, and Tuiasosopo went 2-for-4 with the Knights' only RBI.

The G-Braves will conclude the regular season with a 12:05 p.m. game against the Knights on Monday at Coolray Field. Right-hander Jake Brigham (3-1, 4.95 ERA) will start for Gwinnett, while Charlotte will counter with right-hander Brad Penny (7-9, 4.26 ERA). Tony Schiavone has the play-by-play call on 97.7 FM and WSBRadio.com beginning at 11:30 a.m.

The first 2,000 fans through the gates will receive a Gwinnett Braves 2016 Magnetic Schedule. Fans will also be able to purchase a chicken sandwich, chips and a 16 oz. soft drink at the special price of $7 at the Flashpoint Grille for "Meal Deal Monday."
