Too Little, Too Late for Mud Hens in Columbus
September 6, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Toledo Mud Hens News Release
The story of the night for Toledo was too little, too late. In their Sunday evening game, the offense only tallied four hits, and lost to the Columbus Clippers 2-1. The Hens loaded the bases with no outs in the ninth inning, but were only able to scratch across one run.
The Clippers got on the board first in the second inning. With one out in the inning, Adam Moore doubled for Columbus' first hit of the game. A batter later, James Ramsey plated Moore with a single to put the Clippers ahead 1-0. In the third inning, they scored another run courtesy of an RBI double from Zach Walters. The Clippers tried to score a second run on the same play, but a relay from Trayvon Robinson and Alexi Casilla gunned Erik Gonzalez down at home plate.
The offense of the Mud Hens was dormant all night, tallying only three hits through eight innings. Tim Melville pitched solidly for five innings, allowing only two runs on eight hits. He also struck out six batters and walked only one. The bullpen came on in the sixth inning and did masterful work. Angel Nesbitt threw one and two-thirds innings, striking out two and allowing no runs, and then southpaw Joe Mantiply came on with two outs in the seventh. Mantiply went on to throw an inning and a third, striking out two.
In the ninth, Toledo threatened to get right back into the game. Steven Moya walked to start the top half of the inning, and then Mike Hessman singled to move him over to second. Daniel Fields followed with a walk to load the bases on Carlos Marmol with no outs. Marmol rebounded though, and struck out Corey Jones for the first out of the inning. Josh Wilson followed, and sent the first pitch he saw to center field for a sacrifice fly to get the Hens on the board. Marmol got the final out of the inning though, sealing the victory for the Clippers.
The Mud Hens conclude the 2015 season on the road against the Columbus Clippers at 3:05 p.m.
