Gwinnett Stripers News Release
ROCHESTER, NY -The Gwinnett Braves scored two runs in the first inning and rode the solid pitching of Todd Redmond and Cory Gearrin to a 2-1 win over the Rochester Red Wings in game two of the four game series Sunday afternoon at Frontier Field in Rochester, NY.
In top of the first, with two outs and the bases empty Stefan Gartrell (10) smacked a solo homer to center field off of Red Wings starter Luke French to give Gwinnett a 1-0 lead. Ernesto Mejia followed with a double to left to extend his hitting streak to nine games. Mejia would score from second as the next batter, Drew Sutton doubled past the first-base bag for a 2-0 lead.
Redmond got into trouble in the bottom of the first, giving up a lead-off double to Clete Thomas. Pedro Florimon bunted Thomas to third, and former G-Brave Wilkin Ramirez continued his hot hitting with an RBI single to left cutting the Gwinnett lead to 2-1.
Both teams would fail to score the rest of the way.
Gwinnett had opportunities to add to the lead in many innings, putting runners in scoring position in the fourth, fifth, sixth and ninth innings. However, the G-Braves ended the game 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position. The Red Wings were 1-for-6 with RISP.
Redmond (W, 4-3) earned his second win of the road trip. He pitched seven innings, allowing a run on five hits, walked none and struck out three. Gearrin (S, 3) pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth with one walk and four strikeouts.
French (L, 0-1) worked 5.1 innings in the loss. He was tagged for two runs on six hits while walking one and striking out two. Lester Oliveros worked 0.2 of an inning with one strikeout. Matt Maloney pitched the final three innings, giving up one hit while striking out two.
Offensively, the G-Braves came away with seven hits on the day. Mejia had the only multi-hit day going 2-for-4. Gartrell's homer, his fourth blast on the road trip, was his only hit. Sutton's double was his only hit as well. The other four hits came from Luis Durango, Joey Terdoslavich and Josh Wilson; each with a single.
Ramirez was the only Red Wings player with more than one hit. He was 2-for-4 with the lone RBI. The other three hits came from Thomas, Danny Valencia and Matt Carson.
The Gwinnett Braves (26-18) and Rochester Red Wings (18-25) continue the four-game series in Rochester on Monday at 7:05 PM. Right-hander Jair Jurrjens (2-1, 5.06 ERA) will pitch for the G-Braves.
