G-Braves Drop Finale 7-3, Series to Pawtucket
August 15, 2011 - International League (IL1)
Gwinnett Stripers News Release
The Gwinnett Braves lost the series and homestand finale to the Pawtucket Red Sox 7-3 on Monday night at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville, GA. The G-Braves battled back from an early deficit with a homer from slugger Stefan Gartrell, but couldn't overcome a leaky bullpen on the night. The G-Braves (67-56) remain in second place in the International League South at 2.5 games behind Durham. Gwinnett is also second in the Wild Card race by a 1.5 game margin behind Lehigh Valley. The Red Sox (70-52) remain in first place in the IL North (all figures at press time).
It Was Over When: G-Braves newly optioned reliever Anthony Varvaro followed his scoreless 7th inning with basically the opposite in the 8th inning. After retiring the first two batters in the 8th in a 3-3 tie, Varvaro walked the next two hitters and followed that by letting up a single and then a double. When he was removed after that 2 RBI double by Boston's top prospect Jose Iglesias, Gwinnett trailed 6-3.
Braves Beat:
On the Mound: Starting RHP Erik Cordier went 6.0 IP, allowing 3 R/ER on 6 H with 3 BB and 7 K's, but also gave up 2 HR in the no-decision. RHP Varvaro (2-7), in his first appearance since being sent back down after a successful stint with Atlanta, went 1.2 IP and allowed 3 R/ER on 3 H with 3 BB and 2 K's in the loss.
At the Plate: Gartrell, the 2011 Triple-A All-Star Home Run Derby champ, played DH and finished 1-for-4 with 2 RBI and his 25th homer of the season (second in the IL). First baseman Mauro Gomez was 3-for-4, while LF Matt Young finished 0-for-3 with an RBI. Center fielder Jeff Fiorentino was 2-for-4 with a SB.
The Opposition:
On the Mound: Red Sox starting RHP Brandon Duckworth went 6.0 IP, yielding 3 R/ER and scattering 8 H without a BB and posting 6 K's and a HR allowed in a no-decision. LHP Tommy Hottovy (2-0) went 1.1 IP of scoreless ball for the win.
At the Plate: Pawtucket's Iglesias played another fine game at SS, and finished up 2-for-5 with 2 RBI to pace the squad. Third baseman Hector Luna was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI as well.
On Deck: The G-Braves hit the road for a six game trip way up in Syracuse for four games and then way back down in the Carolinas for a pair of contests. The trip begins against the Chiefs on Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m. Gwinnett will send out a starter to be announced against Chiefs RHP Brad Meyers (4-4, 3.79). The game can be heard on the voice of the Gwinnett Braves, WDUN 550 AM and 102.9 FM.
