Durham Bulls News Release

(Buffalo, NY) Russ Canzler's homer to center gave Durham the lead for good in game two and Tim Beckham capped a doubleheader sweep with a grand slam in an 8-3 win Monday over Buffalo. Durham (69-52) won 2-1 in the opener, and now has a three-game lead over Gwinnett in the South Division with 21 games left.

Canzler's bomb to center field off Mike O'Connor (4-5), his team-leading 17th, gave Durham the lead at 4-3 in the eighth inning. After two singles and a fielder's choice, Beckham hit a lined shot over the wall in left-center to cap a great day.

The 21-year-old, the first overall pick in the 2008 draft, had doubled in the seventh to start a game-tying rally. Beckham scored the tying run on Stephen Vogt's sac fly to deep left-center off former Bull Dale Thayer.

Beckham had a single, double and homer in game two, and had an RBI triple in game one that was the deciding RBI in the 2-1 victory.

Mike Ekstrom (5-3) earned the win in the nightcap with two scoreless innings in relief. Andy Sonnanstine (3-3) went 6.1 innings in game one to earn the win, while Rob Delaney got the last two outs for his sixth save. Gwinnett meanwhile dropped a 7-3 home game to Pawtucket.

The Bulls (69-52) now head to Scranton to meet the Yankees on Tuesday. Alex Rodriguez is rehabbing with Scranton and former UNC standout Adam Warren is starting.

First pitch is at 7:05 with Matt Torra on the mound for Durham. Coverage on 620 the Buzz begins at 6:50 pm.
