
Furbush Wins Battle of Fourth-Round Picks

APPLETON, WI - Charlie Furbush was chosen by the Tigers in fourth round of the 2007 draft while his opponent on Monday, Nolan Gallagher was the fourth round choice of the Mariners. Furbush got the better of their first professional meeting and improved to 3-0 the Whitecaps defeated Wisconsin, 4-2. West Michigan is 6-1 on the current road trip.
Furbush made the longest appearance of his professional career with seven innings pitched, no walks allowed and ten strikeouts. He surrendered both Timber Rattler runs, which came in the fourth inning, then retired 10 batters in a row.
Brennan Boesch hit his tenth home run of the season in the fourth to push the West Michigan lead to 2-0. Two batters later, Ryan Strieby launched his fifteenth of the season for a 3-0 advantage.
Brett Jensen pitched a perfect ninth inning to earned convert on his tenth consecutive save opportunities. Jensen is 22 of 24 save chances this season.
Michael Bertram put the Whitecaps in front with an RBI single in the second inning that drove home Gorkys Hernandez.
Earlier in the inning, Hernandez extended his season-long hitting streak with 10 games with a one-out single. He then stole second base for his Midwest League-leading 47th steal of the year.
Alex Liddi went deep for Wisconsin in the bottom of the fourth.
There were no home runs hit by the two teams in the first two games of the series.
Audy Ciriaco went 2-for-3 and led off the eighth inning with a triple. He scored on a wild pitch by reliever Harold Williams.
How the West Was Won: West Michigan's final game of the regular season against a Western Division opponent is Tuesday at Wisconsin. It will also be the end of an eight game road trip for the Whitecaps. RHP Jonah Nickerson (11-6, 3.65) is scheduled to be the starting pitcher and puts a seven decision winning streak and a 23.1 inning scoreless streak on the line against Timber Rattlers RHP Keith Renaud (4-3, 3.66).
