South Carolina Stingrays News Release

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC The South Carolina Stingrays announced today that five time Stanley Cup Champion Grant Fuhr will drop the first puck for the team's home opener against the Columbus Cottonmouths tonight. Game time is at 7:30. Fuhr is in Charleston to participate in the Kiawah Pro Celebrity Golf Challenge.

Grant is one of the most prolific goaltenders in the history of the NHL. The Calgary, Alberta native played 868 games in hockey's top league with a record of 403-295-114. He helped the Edmonton Oilers win five Stanley Cup championships and was awarded the Vezina Trophy, for being the league's top goaltender, in 1998.

A six time NHL All-Star, Fuhr was named the MVP of the NHL All Star Game in 1986.

"Grant Fuhr was a household name in hockey in the 80's," explained Stingrays Head Coach and former Edmonton Oilers farmhand Jason Fitzsimmons. "Growing up in Western Canada, I had the pleasure of watching Grant stop pucks for the Oilers when I was starting out in hockey. It's going to be great to see him at the Coliseum tonight. I am sure he will give our players a charge.

Fuhr retired from hockey in 2000 after 20 years in the NHL. He still holds records for games played (79) and consecutive starts (76) in a season. An avid golfer, Grant is a member of the Celebrity Players Tour.

The Stingrays currently have a record of 2-0. Tickets are still available at 554-6060 or at the coliseum box office. Fans can tune in to all the play-by-play action beginning at 7:05 on News Talk 1250 WTMA or stingrayshockey.com.
