July 4, 2010 - Frontier League (FL)
Lake Erie Crushers News Release
Sauget, IL - With the Oakland County Cruisers' 12-6 win over the Southern Illinois Miners on Saturday night, the field managers for the 2010 Frontier League All-Star Game, presented by Peoples National Bank, have been determined. Gera Alvarez of the Oakland County Cruisers will be leading the East Division while Mike Pinto of the host Southern Illinois Miners will guide the West Division.
Frontier League rules call for the field managers in first place in the respective divisions following play on July 7 to manage in the All-Star Game. After this evening, the Oakland County Cruisers hold a four game lead over the Lake Erie Crushers and Traverse City Beach Bums with three games to play while the Southern Illinois Miners have a 13.5 game lead over the River City Rascals.
Gera Alvarez is currently in his first season as a field manager, being promoted to the position on the eve of Opening Day when former field manager Eric Coleman took over as general manager of the Cruisers. Alvarez served as hitting coach for the Midwest Sliders, as the team was previously known, in 2009, guiding the team to a tie for the third best batting average in the Frontier League and the third most team hits while the Sliders had the fewest team strikeouts. Oakland County has won 18 of their past 23 games.
Mike Pinto has led the Southern Illinois Miners since their inception for the 2007 season. Mike is the winningest Frontier League manager for this span, producing a 198-131 record and qualifying for the playoffs as a Wild Card following the 2008 season. Southern Illinois shattered the previous Frontier League record by winning 20 consecutive games from June 9-28. Their current .854 winning percentage is the best in professional baseball.
The 2010 Frontier League All-Star game, presented by Peoples National Bank, will take place at Rent One Park in Marion, Illinois, at 7:05 PM on Wednesday, July 14. The All-Star Game is the culmination of three days of activities at Rent One Park. The action begins on July 12 with a concert featuring Craig Morgan and Rodney Atkins. July 13 features the All-Star luncheon banquet and the Home Run Derby along with a Celebrity Softball Game that evening. Among the softball participants are former St. Louis Cardinals and current Fox Sports Midwest commentators Jack Clark and Al Hrabosky, both of whom will also be speaking at the banquet. Tickets and additional information for all events are available at www.southernillinoisminers.com.
