Washington Wild Things News Release
Washington, Pa. - Prior to Sunday night's game, the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, were 0-19 when trailing after seven innings. But the Wild Things provided all of the fireworks necessary on a July 4 Sunday as they came back from an 8-3 deficit to defeat the Florence Freedom, 9-8, and win back-to-back series for the first time in the 2010 season. They are 16-0 when leading after eight innings.
The Wild Things hit for the cycle as a team in the bottom of the eighth, including a 2-RBI triple by Jacob Dempsey and Denny Duron's third home run of the season that tied things up at 8-8. Michael Parker knocked in what proved to be the game-winning run with a single, plating Chris Sidick.
Kevin Hammons set down the Freedom in order in the ninth inning for the save, including striking out Stephen Shults, who had a three-hit, five-RBI night for the Freedom to lead their offense.
The Wild Things recovered to win the game after starting pitcher Tim Smith struggled to find his rhythm. In the first three innings, Smith allowed four hits and hit three batters. His final line saw him surrender 10 hits and seven earned runs. Justin Edwards inherited a bases loaded situation in the sixth inning.
All three runners ended up scoring, capped by a Shults three-run home run to dead center field. Edwards settled down for the next two innings, striking out the side in the seventh and, after allowing a lead off walk to Billy Mottram who got caught stealing, got the next two outs to set up the drama in the bottom of the eighth.
Florence exploded for six extra-base hits, including five double and a home run in the game, but it was all for naught. Each team had 11 hits in a game that took 2 hours, 49 minutes.
Edwards picked up the win in relief to improve to 2-0. Hammons' save was his first of the year. Julian Arballo picked up the loss for the Freedom, going 0.1 innings and allowing four hits and three runs, including Duron's game-tying home run.
The Wild Things hit the road to take on the Evansville Otters for a three-game series starting Tuesday. Pre-game coverage starts at 6:55 p.m. on WJPA 95.3 FM. Washington returns home July 16 after the All-Star break to begin a six-game homestand starting with the Oakland County Cruisers.
