Frischmon's Buzzer Beater Sinks Pirates

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - Sound Tigers forward Trevor Frischmon banged a loose puck past Pirates goaltender Peter Mannino as time expired in overtime to give Bridgeport a 4-3 win over Portland on Saturday night at Webster Bank Arena. With the win, the Sound Tigers maintain sole possession of first place in the Northeast Division and improve to 36-24-3-6. The Pirates fall to 32-30-3-5.

The Sound Tigers took an early 1=2D0 lead 6:02 into the first period when Blair RIley put a rebound past Mannino for his seventh goal of the season and third tally in as many games. Kevin Poulin was stellar in net in the opening frame, turning aside 13 shots to keep the Sound Tigers ahead by a goal after 20 minutes.

Portland dictated much of the second period, as Brett MacLean centered a puck from the right circle that deflected off Steve Oleksy's skate and past Poulin to tie the game at one just 2:28 into the middle frame. The Pirates took the lead at 14:24 when Nick Ross sent a shot from the left point through traffic for his third goal of the season to give Portland a 2-1 advantage. Bridgeport nearly knotted the score late in the period prior ot heading on the power play, but Rhett Rakhshani hit the right post with a slap shot and the Sound Tigers could not solve Mannino with the man advantage as Portland carried its lead to the third period.

Jon Landry tied the score for the Sound Tigers at 2:46 of the third period, sending a wrist shot from the left point through traffic and past Mannino to even the game at two. Rhett Rakhshani gave the Sound Tigers the lead midway through the period, deflecting Justin DiBenedetto's pass home for his 17th goal of the season. Portland applied pressure in the final minutes of regulation and found the equalizer just as Mannino was pulled in favor of the extra attacker, as Andy Miele found a rebound to beat Poulin to tie the score at three with 55.1 seconds left in regulation and send the game to overtime.

Portland nearly came away with the game-winning goal midway through overtime when Ross knocked at a loose puck towards an outstretched Kevin Poulin . The puck floated in the air along the goal line, but Landry was able to tuck the puck beneath Poulin and after a review, the referee ruled no goal. Frischmon's heroics came just as time expired in the extra session. The veteran forward had a wraparound attempt at the right post stopped by Mannino, but Frischmon banged away and sent it past the Portland netminder as time expired to set off the celebration as the Sound Tigers earned the 4-3 win.

Tonight's win marked the Sound Tigers second victory late in overtime in less than a week's time. Matt Donovan netted a game-winning overtime goal with 2.0 seconds left in the extra session on Sunday, March 25 to beat the Whale 4=2D3.

Poulin made 38 saves to earn his 21st win of the season. Former Sound Tiger Peter Maninno made 32 saves in the loss for Portland.

The Sound Tigers continue their eight-game homestand tomorrow afternoon when they host the Manchester Monarchs at 3:00 p.m. on Autism Awareness Day. The Sound Tigers will wear commemorative puzzle piece warm-up jerseys that will be auctioned off, with all proceeds going to Cooperative Educational Services.
