Fresno Grizzlies News Release
DES MOINES, Iowa - One night after the Fresno Grizzlies (79-52) wrapped up the PCL Northern Division Championship, the club suffered a 3-2 loss to the Iowa Cubs (73-58) on Wednesday night at Principal Park. Fresno starter Brett Oberholtzer was the tough luck loser, allowing only two runs (one earned) over the course of six innings and striking out seven. A costly error by the left-handed pitcher in the third allowed Iowa to grab the lead. With two outs and runners on second and third, Javy Baez hit a slow tapper onto the left side of the infield, forcing Oberholtzer into a hurried throw that sailed past first baseman Tyler White and into foul territory, allowing the Cubs to take a 2-1 lead.
Reliever Jake Buchanan allowed the game-deciding run in the eighth when Emilio Bonifacio singled to shallow center, stole second, and scored on a sinking liner from Javy Baez. Fresno came back with a run in the ninth to close the game to one, but Jonathan Villar struck out looking with the game-tying run on first base.
Neither Oberholtzer nor Buchanan walked a batter over the course of the game and allowed only seven combined hits to the Cubs. Oberholtzer is 4-1 with a 1.83 ERA (7 ER/34.1 IP), 22 strikeouts and four walks over his last five starts.
Fresno loaded the bases in the third with nobody out, but only managed a run when Preston Tucker bounced into an RBI force out, while Robbie Grossman flew into a double play that saw L.J. Hoes tagged out at the plate. They loaded the bags once again in the sixth with two outs, but failed to score when Tyler Heineman bounced out to second.
The Grizzlies will bus out tonight and drive west along I-80 towards Omaha, where they'll begin a four-game series against the Storm Chasers on Thursday night. Fresno right-hander Mike Hauschild pitches the series opener and faces Omaha righty Casey Coleman. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 PM PT and can be heard locally in Fresno on 1430 AM-KYNO.
