Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - The Sky Sox won their third straight contest thanks to dominating starting pitching and a relentless offense in a 10-2 defeat of the El Paso Chihuahuas before a crowd of 8,096 at Southwest University Park on Tuesday night.

Sox starter Hiram Burgos (3-3, 3.25) had himself an evening. The right-hander tossed five hitless innings, issuing just two free passes while fanning one in the impressive 84-pitch effort. Burgos would leave the game with his team leading 4-0 thanks to his arm and, to the surprise of many, his bat.

The Sox took a 2-0 lead in the fourth against Chihuahuas starter Casey Kelly (0-1, 7.71) on back-to-back two-out RBI singles by Matt Dominguez and Pete Orr before Burgos came to the plate for his second at-bat of the ballgame. The reliable pitcher helped his own cause, lining a two-run single to right field to double the Colorado Springs lead to 4-0 by inning's end. The run-scoring knock was Burgos' first professional hit since recording a third-inning single against Pirates starter Francisco Liriano on May 16th, 2013 at PNC Park and gave him his first career runs batted in.

The Sky Sox scored three more times in the sixth against El Paso righty Tayron Guerrero on another back-to-back pair of RBI singles this time by catching corps members Robinzon Diaz and Juan Centeno. The reliever served up three hits and three walks in the frame as Colorado Springs took a commanding 7-0 lead.

The Chihuahuas would do their best to bite back with Michael Strong taking over after Burgos' departure. El Paso plated two sixth-inning runs against the southpaw on two hits and a productive groundout. Jake Goebbert and Hector Gomez collected RBIs in the frame to cut the El Paso deficit to 7-2 after six innings of play.

The Sox added three runs against Jerry Sullivan in the eighth to cap their scoring for the night, taking a resounding 10-2 lead on a Matt Clark two-run double and Matt Long RBI triple.

Gomez and Will Middlebrooks added a little late-inning thunder for the Chihuahuas with two solo shots against Jim Henderson in the bottom of the ninth. The lanky right-hander would recover however, closing out the 10-4 contest to improve Colorado Springs to 56-74 with the series-clinching victory.

The Sky Sox outhit El Paso 14-4 in the lopsided win to drop the Chihuahuas to 69-61 on the season. Pete Orr recorded his second straight three-hit game as Centeno, Clark and Burgos each drove in two runs in a contest where seven different Sox hitters recorded at least one RBI.

Colorado Springs goes for the sweep on Wednesday in the finale of this four-game set against these same Chihuahuas. Ariel Pena (1-2, 4.33) leads the Sox against El Paso southpaw Robbie Erlin (6-6, 6.29) with first pitch set for 7:05 PM MDT from Southwest University Park.
