Florence Y'alls News Release

TRAVERSE CITY, MI - After having to wait until the sixth inning of game three against the Kalamazoo Kings to hold a lead, the Florence Freedom never trailed Sunday night as they down the Traverse City Beach Bums 9-5.

Ryan Basham, Johnny Welch and Justin Pickett all went deep in the win. Basham's blast in the fourth opened up the scoring and came with a man aboard as the Freedom took a 2-0 lead.

Erold Andrus went 2-5 including a two run double in the fifth to put Florence on top 4-0.

The Beach Bums rallied and came all the way back against Everett Saul in the bottom of the fifth. Four runs scored on six hits as the right-hander came within one out from qualifying for his fourth win.

Instead the game was turned over to Nolan Shaffer. The converted starter went 3.1 innings to earn his first professional win and improve to 1-1.

The offense backed Shaffer with a run in the sixth. Pickett double home another run in the seventh before Welch's two run blast made it 8-5 Freedom.

Pickett, who went 4-5 with two RBIs, capped the scoring with a solo homer, his eighth, in the top of the ninth inning.

Beach Bum starter David Nathanson went five innings and allowed five runs on 10 hits. Reliever Jared Locke allowed the three runs in the seventh as he dropped to 0-1 on the season.

Florence (16-12) snapped a three game skid with the win over the Beach Bums (14-14). Game two of the series can be heard on Classic Country 106.7 FM or 1067WNKR.com at 7:05 p.m. Monday night from Wuerfel Park. Andy Clark (2-1, 2.92 ERA) will make his seventh start of the season for Florence.
