Beach Bums Rally From 4-0 Deficit but Fall to Florence

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. - The Traverse City Beach Bums rallied from a 4-0 deficit but dropped the opener of a series with the Florence Freedom by a 9-5 score on Father's Day in front of a crowd of 4,752.

Florence opened the scoring in the top of the fourth inning against David Nathanson. Billy Mottram led off with a single and was along for the ride as Ryan Basham hit a two-run homer over the wall in right on a 3-1 pitch. Two more runs came across in the fifth against Nathanson as Miguel Magrass led off with a double and was sacrificed to third. Brad Hough was hit by a pitch and both scored on a double to left-center by Erold Andrus.

The Beach Bums rallied to chase starter Everett Saul from the game in the fifth, scoring four times with two outs to knot the score. James Guerrero and Mike Epping singled and John Alonso reached on a fielder's choice. Following a wild pitch to score Guerrero, Mike Victor continued his hot streak with a single through the right side to score two. Kyle Maunus tied the game with a single up the middle.

David Nathanson started the sixth inning but was lifted after the first three batters reached. Nathanson did not factor in the decision, throwing five innings and allowing five runs on 10 hits to go with a strikeout. Miguel Magrass lifted a sacrifice fly off of Jared Locke to put Florence ahead. Again, the Beach Bums rallied to tie the game. Corey Whiting walked with one out in the bottom of the inning and James Guerrero doubled down the line in left to score him.

Florence took control with three runs in the seventh against Locke, who took the loss. Billy Mottram walked with one out, stole second, and scored on a double by Justin Pickett on a 2-0 pitch. John Welch followed by hitting a two-run homer. The Freedom got another homer in the ninth to account for the difference as Justin Pickett, who had four hits in the contest, hit a solo shot over the wall in right.

Traverse City had 10 hits in the game. James Guerrero was 3-for-5 with a double, a run, and an RBI. Kyle Maunus also had two hits in the game.

The series will continue tomorrow night at Wuerfel Park with a 7:05pm game. RHP Kevin Reese (3-1, 5.48) gets the call for the Beach Bums while RHP Andy Clark (2-1, 2.92) counters for Florence. It's a TBA Credit Union Kid's Club Night at Wuerfel Park featuring a Piggy Bank giveaway.
