Lake Erie Crushers News Release

AVON, Ohio - The Lake Erie Crushers dropped their second straight game to the Florence Freedom, falling 7-4 Thursday night at All Pro Freight Stadium.

The Freedom started early against Crushers starter Matt Smith, scoring five times in the top of the first. Billy Mottram and Tim Grogan both singled to lead off the game and a walk to Michael Campbell loaded the bases with one out. Stephen Shults singled home Mottram and a Johnny Welch sacrifice fly scored Grogan. Jimmy Baker followed with a three-run homer down the line in right to round out the inning.

The Crushers got one of the runs back on a sacrifice fly by Lee Huggins to score Eddie Tisdale in the second, but Michael Campbell restored the five-run Florence advantage with a solo home run to open the third.

Lake Erie placed its first two batters on in both the fourth and fifth but was only able to muster one run on those opportunities, which came in the fifth when Julio Rivera drove in Dom Duggan with a single.

The Crushers continued to threaten in the later innings, loading the bases in the eighth but failing to score when Liam Ohlmann struck out pinch hitters David Phillips and Wayne Bond to end the threat. Florence picked up an insurance run in the ninth on a Campbell RBI-single to make it 7-2.

Lake Erie made a serious run at tying the game in the ninth. Andrew Davis's single plated Dom Duggan and Jodam Rivera scored when Travis Vetters grounded into a double play to bring the Crushers within three. Eddie Tisdale walked and Andrew Saylor beat out an infield single before Lee Huggins hit one to the warning track but into the waiting glove of Campbell to end the game.

Matt Smith took his second consecutive loss for Lake Erie, falling to 5-3 after giving up six runs on seven hits over five innings. He finished his outing by recording eight consecutive outs. Crushers center fielder Dom Duggan was 2-for-3 in the game with two walks and his three stolen bases.

EXTRA SWINGS:

- Dom Duggan's three stolen bases were the most in a single game this season; He now has a Lake Erie record 19 on the season

- Crusher batters were able to draw eight walks and were also hit by a pitch twice

- David Phillips made his pro debut by pinch hitting in the 10th; Travis LaMar also debuted, tossing a pair of scoreless frames and striking out four
