Florence Y'alls News Release

FLORENCE, KY - The Florence Freedom are starting to get used to this double digit run thing as the for third time in their last four games, the Freedom put up at least 10 runs, winning 12-5 Wednesday to finish off a sweep of the Evansville Otters.

Florence matched a franchise best by clubbing 21 hits spread out against four Evansville pitchers. The only Otter pitcher to not give up a hit was Justin Smith as he pitched a perfect eighth to prevent the record setting 22nd.

After the Otters grabbed their first lead of the series with a three-run homer off Everett Saul in the first, Florence scored seven unanswered runs and never looked back in the rain delayed affair.

Justin Pickett hit the first of three Freedom home runs with a man aboard in the second to tie the game at three. It was Pickett's thirteenth of the season. Two batters later, Jay Johnson gave the Freedom a lead they would not give up with an RBI double to score Brad Hough.

Ryan Basham, 7, and Billy Mottram, 17, both hit solo homers for the Freedom in the fifth. For Mottram, it was his first homer since July 1.

Basham finished the game 4-5 and drove in two more runs in the Freedom's six run sixth inning with a single. The all-star MVP went 8-13 in the series with five RBI.

Saul (8-3) was good enough to pick up his Frontier League best eighth victory. The right-hander went six innings and allowed five runs in the win. Florence's bullpen tossed three shutout innings to finish off the Otters.

The Freedom (27-26) have now won four straight and are over .500 for the first time since July 7. Up next for the Freedom is a three game trip to Lake Erie to hook up with the second place Crushers.
