TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. - David Nathanson pitched a economical five-hitter to outduel Jay Monti on Wednesday as the Traverse City Beach Bums beat the Rockford RiverHawks, 3-1.

Nathanson (3-7) needed 94 pitches for the complete-game win. He struck out five without a walk and did not give up an earned run. Monti, who had a perfect game through 5 1/3 innings, was touched for an unearned run in the seventh and gave up the go-ahead runs in the bottom of the eighth. Monti (5-5) gave up three runs, two earned, on six hits. He struck out two without a walk.

The game lasted just 1 hour, 43 minutes, the shortest game of the year.

Singles from Mike Victor, Brian Lapin and Anthony D'Alfonso to begin the eighth broke a 1-1 tie. Andrew Barbaro's sacrifice fly brought home an insurance run.

Rockford scored its lone run in the third inning when a double and error got Jason James to third base and a Nathanson wild pitch brought him home. James, who hit in the leadoff spot for the first time, was 2-for-4.

Brandon Cohen, who hit in James' customary No. 3 spot on Wednesday, was 1-for-3 and extended his hitting streak to a career-best 10 games.

The RiverHawks come for a three-game series against Southern Illinois beginning at 7:05 p.m. on Thirsty Thursday. Miller Lite and 104.9 - the X sponsor Dollar Beer Night.
