(Joliet, IL) - Bad weather cost the Florence Freedom (40-49) in a 4-1 loss to the Joliet Slammers (35-55) Thursday night.
Florence scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 6-4 lead but those runs ended up not counting as the teams were unable to complete the bottom of the seventh as the game was called due to rain. Per league rules, the score reverted back to 4-1 in favor of the Slammers as Joliet salvaged the finale of the three game series.
Joliet got on the board first as Adam Giacalone singled to left field with runners at first and second. Initially the Slammers held Grant DeBruin at third but Matt Weaver was caught in a rundown between second and third. DeBruin attempted to score and was successful when Chance Ross' throw sailed wide of home plate.
The Slammers tallied three more runs in the bottom of the fifth. With the bases loaded and one out, Weaver singled to deep right field, scoring two runs. Giacalone contributed a RBI grounder to extend the Joliet lead to 4-0.
Florence got their lone official run in the sixth inning as Sam Eberle and Jacob Tanis smacked back-to-back singles to start the frame. Two outs later Adam Taylor singled home Eberle to cut the deficit to 4-1.
But that's how the game would end as after the Freedom plated five runs in the top of the seventh, Joliet got two men on base in the bottom of the seventh before the game was postponed. It would not resume so the events of the seventh inning never happened as you have to complete the entire inning for them to count.
The Freedom head to Evansville for four games with the Otters starting Friday night with a double header. Jorge Marban (4-5, 4.36 ERA) takes the hill for game one and Michael O'Neal (2-5, 6.82 ERA) takes the mound for game two. First pitch of game one is set for 6:35 p.m. eastern time and all the action can be heard on http://mixlr.com/florencefreedom/.
