Washington Wild Things News Release
O'Fallon, MO - The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, saw leads of three and four runs evaporate in games one and two of their doubleheader against the River City Rascals as they were swept at TR Hughes Ballpark Thursday.
The Wild Things jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first game, but the Rascals weathered the storm and battled back scoring eight runs in three innings en route to their 8-6 win. Washington starter Scott Dunn suffered his fifth loss of the season while River City pitcher Kyle Brady earned the win. Brady's fellow teammate Nick Kennedy recorded his first save of the year.
With two outs in the first, left fielder Scott Kalamar launched a solo home run giving Washington the 1-0 advantage. The Things added two more runs in the second as Heck connected for his second home run of the season, a two-run shot, to extend the visitors lead by three, 3-0. But, the Rascals pulled back within one in the bottom of the second, 3-2 and scored three more runs in the third and fourth to take a commanding 8-3 lead. The Wild Things made some noise in the fifth as designated hitter Josh Henderson led off the inning with a single and came around to score on Kalamar's RBI single to cut the deficit 8-4. A two-run homer by right fielder Jose Dore added more fuel to the Wild Things comeback effort but Washington fell short as Rascals reliever Kennedy recorded the final two outs of game one.
Thirty minutes later, another Wild Things advantage was erased as River City edged the visitors 6-5 in the nightcap. Henderson went 1-3 at the plate, with one RBI, one run scored and his first home run with the Wild Things in the loss.
An RBI groundout by first baseman William Beckwith and back-to-back RBI doubles off the bats of Heck and Dore gave Washington a comfortable 4-0 lead after three and a half. But, River City quickly responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the third to make it a 3-1 ballgame. The teams swapped a run each in the fourth as Henderson led off the frame with a solo homerun. With the home team down 5-2 in the fifth, River City pushed across four scores to take their first lead of game two, 6-5 and held on clinching a playoff berth in the 2014 Frontier League playoffs.
