Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, MI - The Southern Illinois Miners rallied from a three-run deficit, scoring five straight runs over two innings to knock off the Traverse City Beach Bums 5-3 on Thursday night at Wuerfel Park.
Staked to a 3-0 lead, Ian MacDougall carried a one-hitter into the seventh inning for Traverse City before allowing hits to the first two batters. A strikeout and a fielder's choice that cut down a run at the plate put MacDougall an out away from escaping the jam. He got Steve Marino into an 0-2 hole, but Marino jacked a three-run homer on the next pitch to knot the game up at three.
An inning later facing Chuck Ghysels, Southern Illinois used a one-out triple from Jay Austin and an infield single from Ryan Cavan to take a 4-3 lead. After a wild pitch, Niko Vasquez singled in Cavan to put the Miners up 5-3.
MacDougall settled for a no-decision, but still notched a quality start. He gave up three runs on just four hits in seven innings while striking out five. Ghysels (2-4) was dealt the loss by allowing two runs on three hits in the eighth.
Traverse City had some early offensive struggles against Miners starter Rick Teasley, who retired the first 11 he faced before Jose Vargas doubled to right-center with two outs in the fourth inning. Vargas then scored on a Yazy Arbelo single and Jovan Rosa kept the rally going with an RBI double to give the Beach Bums a 2-0 lead in the fourth. In the next inning, Chris Cowell led of with a triple and scampered home on a suicide squeeze from Josh Miller to make it 3-0
Teasley (10-5) ended up earning the victory by tossing seven innings, giving up three runs on five hits in six innings. Derrick Miramontes earned his 19th save of the year by striking out the side in the ninth around a walk and a hit batter.
The Beach Bums now turn their focus to the Rockford Aviators for the final home series of the year starting on Friday at 7:05 p.m. Casey Delgado (6-6, 3.40) will start for TC against Rockford's Ryan Bonnot (0-1, 7.71). In addition to the last Fireworks show of the year, one lucky fan will win a 10-day vacation to Hawaii courtesy of Passageways Travel and TVC Airport. Fans can listen to the broadcast starting at 6:45 p.m. on Classic Rock the Bear 98.1/107.1 and classicrockthebear.com.
