Alec Lewis threw five shutout innings but the Freedom fell 2-1 to Southern Illinois on Monday night in Marion, Ill. The Miners swept the Freedom as Florence finished 0-6 on the road trip.

Chris Curley started the fourth inning with a single to left against Miners starter Joe Augustine. Willie Holmes was hit by a pitch to put two runners on. After there were two outs, Justin Holloway sent a grounder up the middle and second baseman Justin Randall made a diving stop at second. Curley tried to score and Randall's throw home was off the glove of catcher Sean Coughlin. Coughlin's error plated an unearned run to make it 1-0.

Augustine allowed just the unearned run on four hits in five innings and took a no-decision.

Lewis pitched his way out of jams in the first, second and fifth to hold the Miners scoreless on four hits in his best outing of the season. The Miners' Nate Hall hit a two-out solo homer in the sixth off of Freedom reliever Braden Tullis to tie the game at one.

In the eighth, the bases were empty with two outs when Southern Illinois' Sean Harrell started a rally with a single off of Tim Holmes (L, 2-6). Nate Hall singled to left to put runners on first and second. Boomer Blanchard sent a single to left and Harrell scored just ahead of the tag of Freedom catcher Jeff Dunbar to give the Miners a 2-1 lead.

The Freedom did not have a base runner after Holloway's single in the fourth, as Ryan Quigley (W, 3-1) and Clayton Dill (Save, 3) combined to pitch four perfect innings. The last 16 hitters were set down in order and the Freedom struck out a season-high 15 times.

Florence has lost a season-high six straight games. They are also 0-8 against the Miners this season.

The Freedom return home Tuesday night at 7:05 for a six-game homestand that kicks off with a 7:05 p.m. start against the Lake Erie Crushers. Jeff Frost will start for the Freedom.
