Freedom End Skid At Five With 6-4 Win

FLORENCE, KY - Erold Andrus hit the Florence Freedom's first home run in the past five games and the Freedom ended their skid at five with a 6-4 win over the Southern Illinois Miners Saturday night at Champion Window Field.

David Odquist made his Freedom debut on the hill and fell behind 3-0 after the first three innings. But, the Freedom bats took his back in the bottom of the third inning with a four spot.

With one out Jordan Baker walked and Brad Hough singled. Jay Johnson then drove in both with just his sixth extra base hit of the season, a double to cut the Miners lead to 3-2. Then it was Andrus who stepped to the plate against Ryan Mitchell (1-2) and delivered a mammoth blast to right-center field to give the Freedom a 4-3 lead.

Both teams exchanged runs in the fourth as the Miners tied the game with a Tony Roth RBI double. Justin Pickett put the Freedom back on top with an RBI single which scored Johnny Welch.

Florence added an insurance run in the seventh when Welch was walked with the bases loaded.

Jordan Towns (1-2) tossed 4 1/3 strong innings for the Freedom out of the bullpen for the win. Towns allowed only one run and struck out five.

Demetrius Banks got the only batter he faced to ground into an inning ending double play in the eighth inning before Jimmy Stanley worked a scoreless ninth for his second save.

The Freedom (22-24) and Miners (26-21) will play the rubber match of the series Sunday night in Florence at 6:05 p.m.

It will be 'Bark at the Park' Sunday night at Champion Window Field. Enjoy pre-game wiener dog races and fans are invited to bring their dogs out to the park.
