Midwest Sliders of Ypsilanti News Release
YPSILANTI MI - The Midwest Sliders of Ypsilanti won in the most dramatic fashion Saturday night at EMU's Oestrike Stadium. Robbie Knapp hit a walk-off grand slam to beat the Gateway Grizzlies 10-8.
Gateway took the lead early in the top of the first. After Brandon Peters singled, Charlie Lisk hit a two-run homer putting the Sliders in an early 2-0 hole.
The Sliders' answered right back putting up four runs of their own, in their first at bats. Four hits and a walk helped put Midwest on the board, none bigger than Gil Zayas two-run double.
Chad Rothford cut the lead to 4-3 in the fourth for the Grizzles when he hit a no doubter over the right field wall.
Midwest added a run in the eight when Roberto Mena tripled, and scored off of a Sam DeLuca single.
Then the Grizzlies hit in the ninth, they batted around and scored five runs to take the lead 8-5. Gateway hit for the cycle in the inning and walked twice.
Midwest wasted no time in their last chance getting their first four hitters to reach base. Bryan Bonner doubled, and then Gateway walked the next three batters consecutively to make it 8-6. After a double play and intention walk, Robbie Knapp stepped up with two outs and bases loaded. In a 1-1 count he sent a pitch deep into the Ypsilanti sky, and over the left-center wall to bring the crowd to their feet.
The victory puts the Sliders one game behind .500 at 22-23. The Sliders look to win the series Sunday at 2:05 p.m. at EMU's Oestrike Stadium. Kyle Kearcher (1-5, 4.28) will take the mound for the Sliders against Paige Dumont (1-1, 4.61) as the Sliders play their last game before the All Star break.
