Cole Miles and Chris Curley each extended their hitting streaks to ten games and Junior Arrojo hit a go-ahead two-run triple in the eighth as the Freedom came back to beat Joliet 6-3 on Tuesday night at Silver Cross Field.
Down 1-0 in the third, Miles helped get the Freedom on the board with a lead off triple and scored on Jimmy Baker's RBI single. Baker has six hits in his last eight at-bats and four RBI in his last three contests.
Freedom starter Preston Vancil kept the game tied as he set down 12 batters in a row from the second through fifth inning. Joliet starter Kevin Crimmel kept the Freedom bats quiet, surrendering just a run on six hits in six innings.
Florence claimed the lead in the seventh on a single by Miles and an error by right fielder Bobby Leeper that allowed pinch-runner John Malloy to score and make it 2-1. The Slammers answered back in the bottom of the inning on a two-run homer by Nick Ochoa off of Vancil. Vancil took the no-decision, giving up three runs (two earned) on four hits in 6 1/3 innings. He walked one and struck out six.
In the eighth, the Freedom had two on with two out when Arrojo hit a two-run triple to dead center field to get the lead back. Stephen Shults added insurance with a two-run homer in the ninth, his second of the year. Corey Martin pitched a scoreless ninth for his sixth save. Austin Bridgewater (1-1) pitched 2/3 of an inning for the win.
The series continues on Wednesday afternoon at 12:05 Eastern. Andy Clark will pitch for Florence.
