Washington Wild Things News Release

MARION, Ill.--For the second game in a row, Luis Rivera drove home the winning run for the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, as the Wild Things won the first game of their six-game road trip 5-3 over the Southern Illinois Miners.

Rivera drove in first baseman Ernie Banks, who had doubled earlier in the inning, to break a 3-3 tie in the sixth inning. Designated hitter Eric Stephens had tied the game one inning before with a lead-off homerun, his first of the season.

Earlier in the game, both teams allowed two runs thanks to shaky play in the field. The Miners got on the board first, scoring two runs on four errors and no hits in the bottom of the second. Southern Illinois returned the favor in the top of the third, giving up two runs to the Wild Things on two errors, two walks and no hits.

The score remained tied at 2-2 until the bottom of the fourth, when Wild Things starting pitcher Justin Hall gave up his first two hits of the game. Miners first baseman Matt Fields doubled then scored on a single by designated hitter Anthony Armenio to give the home team the one-run lead.

After holding the lead from the sixth inning, the Wild Things had to work out of jam in the eighth. Reliever Mick Mattaliano gave up a lead-off double to center fielder Jereme Milons, the only batter he faced, then Kevin Hammons allowed a bloop single to put runners at the corners. After striking out the next batter, the Wild Things caught Milons in a run-down off third base, and Hammons threw another strikeout to end the inning.

Washington added an assurance run in the top of the ninth, when center fielder Chris Sidick singled to bring home left fielder Derek Peren.

Hall (2-1) returned to form after a shaky second outing last week. In seven innings, he allowed three runs (one earned) on two hits with two strikeouts and two walks. Taylor Wulf (0-0-2) pitched the ninth and earned the save, his second of the year.

For the Miners, starter Sean Teague (0-0) threw five innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits, four walks and two strikeouts in the no decision. Reliever Thomas Campbell (0-1) took the loss in his first professional appearance, giving up the winning run in the sixth and pitching two innings, giving up one run on three hits.

Washington and Southern Illinois will meet again tomorrow night at 8:05 p.m. Pre-game coverage starts at 7:55 p.m. on WJPA 95.3 FM. The Wild Things will return to CONSOL Energy Park on Tuesday, June 7, for a 6:35 p.m. match-up against the Miners.
